Competition ’ll stimulate girls’ interest in ICT

Technology firm, Cisco, and Unites Academy Foundation have lamented that girls are disadvantaged in information communication technology (ICT) space because they are often not encouraged to take up courses in Science, Technology, Education and Mathematics (STEM) fields which are hugely male dominated.
They said platforms such as the second edition (Southwest regionals) of the National ICT Champions Olympics for girls it jointly organised will stimulate the interest of girls in ICT and bridge the gender digital divide.
According to the orgnaisers, the competition which took place at the Queens College Gymnasium in Lagos, was aimed at providing a platform for the girl child to demonstrate their skills in ICT, inspire girls to embrace ICT and encourage entrepreneurship skills and ICT competency among girls.
Director/Principal of Queens College, Chief Mrs Bola Are said the world is now a global village through ICT, adding that girls must use ICT to develop their brains, impact their lives positively and add value to the society they live.

Police declare senator as deserter

•Misau denies allegation The police yesterday declared Senator Isa Misau, a former Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), as a deserter from the force. FG will address various grievances in Nigeria – Osinbajo

Acting President Yemi Osinbajo, on Tuesday assured Nigerians that the President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration would address all grievances in the country. Osinbajo, according to a statement issued on Tuesday by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Laolu Akande, stated this during his interaction with leaders from the North, Southeast and the media. The meeting took place between June 13 and June 22. The acting President also urged that such grievances be expressed with grace. Police kill robber for shooting DPO

Two members of a robbery gang that opened fire on the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Ogbere Division, Adeyinka Akingbade, have been arrested by operatives of Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad (FSARS), Ogun State. The Nation  learnt that Adeyinka was injured by the suspects when he and a team of policemen responded to a distress call that robbers invaded a hotel in Itele-Ijebu. The suspects ambushed him and shot him at close range. Spokesman Abimbola Oyeyemi said in a statement that Police Commissioner Ahmed Iliyasu, on getting a report on the shooting, directed FSARS, led by Uba Adam, to arrest the hoodlums. Winners of the keenly contested Spelling Bee Competition, Miss Zuffon Bukola and Miss Rosemary Ogidan, One-Day  Governor , Deputy Gover of Lagos State have awarded a full scholarship as well as N1million each by the State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode. ROYAL SOCIETY AIMS TO BOOST NUMBER OF BLACK SCIENTISTS

  Young black scientists will get sizeable grants towards cutting-edge research in a pilot scheme aimed at increasing their numbers in the field. Five scientists a year will get up to £690,000 spread over four years. The Royal Society, which represents the UK's leading researchers, hopes its grants increase low numbers of black scientists, particularly in research. The fellowships  should allow the recipients to work in any of the country's research institutes. It will also mentor the scientists and help with career networking. Royal Society President Prof Sir Adrian Smith told BBC News that the low numbers of black scientists in the UK was "unacceptable". Nigeria loses N80 billion annually due to road accidents, Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole said in Friday. Mendy Signs For Lorient After Being Cleared Of Rape

  Former Manchester City defender Benjamin Mendy has signed for Ligue 1 side Lorient five days after being cleared of rape. The left-back, 29, whose City contract expired in the summer, has signed a two-year deal with the French club. Amnesty trained 14,366 ex-agitators, says Boroh

The Coordinator, Presidential Amnesty Programme (PAP), Brig.-Gen. Paul Boroh has said about 14,366 ex-agitators were trained in the programme. Gen. Boroh spoke at News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) Forum in Abuja, yesterday. He explained their capacities has been developed in agriculture, automobile engineering, and aviation, with a further look at the sports sector. “As we speak, we have trained over 5,000 in education-capacity development, and over 22, 000 in skill acquisition and entrepreneurship development.” He said the programme granted amnesty to 30,000 ex-agitators of Niger Delta.
