India Signs Up For ITTF Challenge Nigeria Open

The quality of players coming to Lagos for the ITTF Challenge Nigeria Open continues to grow as Commonwealth giant, India have confirmed their participation in the five-day championships.
The Indians are considered as one of the table tennis powerhouses in Commonwealth and they are gradually becoming a global brand in table tennis. For the first time in the history of the ITTF Challenge Nigeria Open, the Indians are coming with three of their best players.
A joker among the Indians coming to Lagos is Sathiyan Gnanasekaran, who defied all odd to the win the 2016 Belgium Open ahead of top players across the globe.
Eight years ago, Sathiyan Gnanasekaran missed out the Asian Junior title because of engineering, now he has become the second Indian to win a tour title. He entered the 2016 Belgium Open seeded 25, but the Tamil Nadu-based star transcended his performances to take down six higher seeds including Sweden’s Harold Andersen in the semis, to book a first ever ITTF tour finals spot. The magnitude of this achievement was that he was only the second Indian ever to achieve this feat.
Like Gnanasekaran, Sanil Shetty is another giant killing Indian, who decade ago at the 2007 India Junior and Cadet Open in New Delhi, reached the semi-final stage of the Junior Boys’ Singles event.
And earlier this year at the 2017 ITTF World Tour India Open, Sanil Shetty currently listed at no.201 on the Men’s World Rankings, now 27 years old, caused the biggest upset of the year in his second Men’s Singles encounter. After accounting for colleague Ronit Bhanja in four straight games (11-8, 11-7, 11-6, 11-8), he overcame the Czech Republic’s Lubomir Jancarik, named at no.94 in the global order; not only did he win, he prevailed in a most dramatic seven games full distance duel (12-14, 12-10, 8-11, 11-4, 8-11, 12-10, 16-14). Gnanasekaran and Shetty will be joined in the three-man men’s team by Sarthak Gandhi for the Lagos trip.
The three-man female team will be led by Krittwika Roy while others are Mallika Bhandarkar and Reeth Tennison on their first trip to Nigeria for the $46,000 prize money championships which serves off on August 9 at the Molade Okoya-Thomas Hall of Teslim Balogun Stadium.

Nigeria loses N80bn to road accidents annually — FG

Nigeria loses N80 billion annually due to road accidents, Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole said in Friday. Adewole who made this known at a handover ceremony of 31 ambulances donated by the Japanese Government in Abuja, said that Nigeria was among countries with the highest rates of vehicle accidents globally. “As a matter of concern, next to Boko Haram Insurgency, road crash is the second highest source of violent death in Nigeria. “According to FRSC reports, Nigeria is among the countries with the highest road accident rates in the world, having 5,400 deaths in 12,077 road crashes in 2015 and 18,353 people injured in road crashes between 2009 and 2013. “According to WHO report in 2015, one in every four road crash deaths in Africa occur in Nigeria, having a higher death toll than malaria. “ Also, Nigeria loses about N80 billion annually to road accidents,’’ he said. FG will address various grievances in Nigeria – Osinbajo

Acting President Yemi Osinbajo, on Tuesday assured Nigerians that the President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration would address all grievances in the country. Osinbajo, according to a statement issued on Tuesday by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Laolu Akande, stated this during his interaction with leaders from the North, Southeast and the media. Police kill robber for shooting DPO

Two members of a robbery gang that opened fire on the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Ogbere Division, Adeyinka Akingbade, have been arrested by operatives of Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad (FSARS), Ogun State. The Nation  learnt that Adeyinka was injured by the suspects when he and a team of policemen responded to a distress call that robbers invaded a hotel in Itele-Ijebu. The suspects ambushed him and shot him at close range. Spokesman Abimbola Oyeyemi said in a statement that Police Commissioner Ahmed Iliyasu, on getting a report on the shooting, directed FSARS, led by Uba Adam, to arrest the hoodlums. Amnesty trained 14,366 ex-agitators, says Boroh

The Coordinator, Presidential Amnesty Programme (PAP), Brig.-Gen. Paul Boroh has said about 14,366 ex-agitators were trained in the programme. Gen. Boroh spoke at News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) Forum in Abuja, yesterday. He explained their capacities has been developed in agriculture, automobile engineering, and aviation, with a further look at the sports sector. “As we speak, we have trained over 5,000 in education-capacity development, and over 22, 000 in skill acquisition and entrepreneurship development.” He said the programme granted amnesty to 30,000 ex-agitators of Niger Delta. Filming of the sequel to Nollywood’s highest-grossing movie,  The Wedding Party , in Dubai has ended and the movie is now in post-production. This was revealed by producers of the film in an email. The Wedding Party 2: Destination Dubai , will have its Lagos premiere on December 10, with cinema release in time for the Christmas holidays. “It has been a remarkable opportunity to film in Dubai,” said director of the movie, Niyi Akinmolayan. “It was magical and the team was awesome. Nigerian posing as MP, judge, jailed in UK over £10m benefits scam

Nigerian illegal immigrant in the United Kingdom (UK) is to spend the next five years in jail after a court found him guilty of leading  a gang which used the identities of members of parliament, judges and police officers to swindle the  taxpayer out of millions of pounds. Kayode Sanni, 38, was jailed for  five years and three months for his role  in the scam,according to The Daily Mail. The gang  stole personal details from the Civil Service Sports Council (CSSC), which provides sport and fitness facilities to more than 120,000 public sector employees and pensioners.
