Swiss court rejects Platini’s appeal against FIFA ban

Switzerland’s highest court rejected former European football boss Michel Platini’s bid to overturn his four-year ban from the sport over ethics violations, the court said on Thursday.
The Swiss Federal Court confirmed a Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) ruling last year that upheld Platini’s ban.
It was a decision stemming from a 2 million Swiss francs ($2.08 million) payment the former French football great received from FIFA in 2011.
Platini, who has denied wrongdoing, was banned from football along with Sepp Blatter, the former FIFA head who approved the payment.

FRSC deploys 33,000 personnel for Sallah

The Federal Road Safety Corps has approved the deployment of 33,000 regular and special marshals, 859 patrol vehicles, 106 ambulances, 267 motorbikes and 22 tow trucks for the 2017 Eid-el-kabir celebrations. This is to address wrong road usage by motorists which results in a high number of crashes during festivities. The Corps Public Education Officer, Bisi Kazeem, emphasized that the operation will focus on traffic control, speeding, dangerous driving/overtaking, clearance of road obstructions, seatbelt use violation, zero tolerance for use of telephone while driving, lane indiscipline and route violation among others as these have been identified as reoccurring factors of Road Traffic Crashes. Senate gives NPA four days for information on 282 missing vessels

The Senate on Thursday, gave the Managing Director, Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Hadiza Usman, four days to explain the whereabouts of over 282 vessels allegedly missing from the sea ports. Sen. Hope Uzodinma, Chairman, Senate’s Joint Committee on Customs, Excise and Tariff and Marine Transport, gave the ultimatum in Abuja, at an investigative hearing on N30 trillion lost through leakages in Customs and other agencies. Uzodinma, who expressed displeasure with the managing director for not honouring the committee’s two previous invitations, said the information on the vessels was imperative and must be available within four days. NIMC chief faults identification system

NATIONAL Identity Management Commission (NIMC)  Director-General, Aliyu Aziz, has faulted the identification system, arguing that it cannot foster economic growth. Julius Malema, leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters party (EFF) said 60 African National Congress (ANC) members in South Africa’s parliament will back a no-confidence vote against President Jacob Zuma if the ballot is secret. Homes submerged in Lagos, Suleja, Ibadan Ikoyi, Lekki, others thrown into darkness Floods hit many Nigerian cities after long hours of rainfall at the weekend. There were deaths. Homes were  flooded. Eleven people died in Suleja and other towns in Niger State. Many parts of Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, were flooded. Residents of highbrow Victoria Island, Lekki and Ajah in Lagos were yesterday waiting for the floods to recede. They were warned to vacate the flood-prone area because of the expected intense rains. Many parts of Lagos Island have been thrown into darkness because the floods soaked power facilities. Niger State was worst hit by the floods after five hours of rainfall.
