Swiss court rejects Platini’s appeal against FIFA ban

Switzerland’s highest court rejected former European football boss Michel Platini’s bid to overturn his four-year ban from the sport over ethics violations, the court said on Thursday.
The Swiss Federal Court confirmed a Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) ruling last year that upheld Platini’s ban.
It was a decision stemming from a 2 million Swiss francs ($2.08 million) payment the former French football great received from FIFA in 2011.
Platini, who has denied wrongdoing, was banned from football along with Sepp Blatter, the former FIFA head who approved the payment.

CBN, banks bicker over slow disbursement of SMEs funds

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN)  and lenders involved in the disbursement of N220 billion Small, Medium Enterprises (SMEs) funds to small businesses have traded blames over the slow pace of the disbursement of the funds. The Group Head, Specialised SMEs of Fidelity Bank, Mr Ndubuisi Onuoha blamed the CBN for the slow pace of disbursement of the funds when asked by a participant why the bank was yet to fund his business over a year after meeting all the requirements. “Fidelity Bank has done over N3billion disbursements; CBN is slowing things down; there is close to N2 billion pending with the CBN; we are doing everything to get the funds for SMEs. The problem is not with Fidelity Bank, we are only a conduit for passing the money to SMEs,” he said. Onuoha spoke in Abuja during the third stream training of SMEs yesterday. Ajimobi flags off N70bn Ibadan Circular Road construction

Governor Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State, on Friday flagged off the construction of the Ibadan Circular Road estimated to cost about N70 billion, which will boost the socio-economic development and transportation system in the state. Speaking at the flag-off held at Badeku Village in Ona-Ara Local Government Area, the governor said the 32km first phase of the 110km road would be completed within 18 months. He said the first phase of the project, which would start from Badeku Village and end at Ajanla Village on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, representing the Northeast corner of the project, was awarded to the ENL Consortium Limited. According to the governor, the project will be financed through a facility sourced from the Nexim Bank of China by the contractor on a “Build, Operate and Transfer“ arrangement between the ENL and the state government. Minister: skilled ICT manpower gap widening

The Minister of Communications, Mr Adebayo Shittu, has lamented the widening gap in skilled manpower in the information communication technology (ICT) sector in the country. He said expatriates have virtually taken over the tech space in the country. Shittu, who spoke at the inauguration of an Implementation Committee on the proposed ICT University of Nigeria, in Abuja,  said it has become imperative to have the university to leapfrog the country into a digital economy. The Committee has six weeks to submit its report so that the university can begin academic activities in the next session. Obiano pays 385 retirees after 38 years

Anambra State Governor Willie Obiano yesterday announced the payment of pensions and gratuities to 385 retirees, after 38 years. It was learnt that the governor had released N700 million while payment will begin at the end of June and last till May 2018. Commissioner for Information and Strategic Planning, Ogbuefi Tony Nnacheta, addressed reporters yesterday in Awka, the state capital, on the development. Some corporations whose retirees have died include Anambra Broadcasting Service (ABS) and Anambra Newspapers Company, publishers of National Light. Nnacheta said those involved had been suffering for years, adding that the money had been provided to stop their agony. The commissioner said the affected workers were 227 ABS ex-workers, 158 from National Light. He recalled that since 1979 and 1992, retired workers of the corporations had not been paid their pensions or gratuities. ECOWAS to set up solidarity fund to rebuild North East

Mr. Edward Singhatey, the Vice President, Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission says that plans are on-going to establish a solidarity Fund for the reconstruction and rehabilitation of the North-East. Singhatey made this known on Tuesday in Abuja during the celebration of the 2017 World Refugee Day with the theme “We stand together with refugees and IDPs”. He said the Solidarity Fund was in compliance with the decision of the Mediation and Security Council to support the Federal Government’s Plan for the reconstruction and rehabilitation of North-East Nigeria. He wore an oversized blue short and sagged his belted black trousers, making sure to keep his shirt lifted. Obaseki versus Ize-Iyamu: Appeal Court gives verdict today

The Court of Appeal sitting in Benin City will today deliver its judgment on the appeal filed by the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu against the judgment of the lower tribunal. Governor Godwin Obaseki and the All Progressive Congress (APC) filed a cross appeal over a ruling of the tribunal refusing to strike out some paragraphs in the petition and to invalidate the order by the tribunal for the inconclusive recount of ballot papers used during the election. Pastor Ize-Iyamu filed 41 grounds of appeal against the tribunal judgment while Obaseki filed four grounds of cross appeal. The three-man tribunal panel led by Justice Ahmed Badamasi upheld the election of Obaseki by throwing out the petition of Pastor Ize-Iyamu.
