Businessman gets one year for attempting to defile girl


A Grade 1 Area Court in Karshi, Abuja, yesterday sentenced Mr. Godwin Aboyi, 28, a businessman, to one year imprisonment for attempting to defile a four-year-old girl.
The convict was charged with a one count of attempt to commit rape, which contravened Section 95 of the Penal Code.
He admitted committing the offence, and begged for leniency.
The Judge, Mr. Aliyu Ibrahim, however, gave the convict an option of N50,000 fine.
Prosecutor Mr. Mamud Ismai’la told the court that the victim’s mother, Anna Joseph, reported the matter at Jikwoyi Police Station on August 14.
He said the complainant left her daughter in the room and went outside.
According to Ismai’la, “while the girl was asleep, the defendant, a neighbour, came in and attempted to abuse the little girl sexually. The complainant caught him and shouted.”
The prosecutor told the court that medical examinations by a government hospital showed the girl was indecently assaulted.

175 Nigerians ‘voluntarily’ return from Libya

Another batch of One Hundred and Seventy-five (175) Nigerians voluntarily returned from Libya on Tuesday aboard a chartered Nouvelair aircraft with registration number TS-INA. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the aircraft landed at 7.50p.m at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos. FRSC deploys 33,000 personnel for Sallah

The Federal Road Safety Corps has approved the deployment of 33,000 regular and special marshals, 859 patrol vehicles, 106 ambulances, 267 motorbikes and 22 tow trucks for the 2017 Eid-el-kabir celebrations. This is to address wrong road usage by motorists which results in a high number of crashes during festivities. Police arrest 100 suspected robbers, others in Anambra

The Anambra State Police Command yesterday paraded 100 suspected criminals for alleged robbery, child trafficking and cultism. Following increased criminal activities across the state, Police Commissioner Garba Baba Umar warned vehicle owners to stop covering their number plates and avoid using sirens. The police said the suspects were arrested at Nnewi, Awada in Onitsha, Agulu in Anaocha Local Government Area as well as Obosi in Idemili North Local Government Area. Amnesty trained 14,366 ex-agitators, says Boroh

The Coordinator, Presidential Amnesty Programme (PAP), Brig.-Gen. Paul Boroh has said about 14,366 ex-agitators were trained in the programme. Gen. Boroh spoke at News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) Forum in Abuja, yesterday.
