Ogun govt calls for synergy among council chiefs


The Ogun State government has urged chairmen of local government areas, local council development areas (LCDAs) and Consultative Advisory Committee (CAC) to maintain a harmonious relationship that will enable the councils develop.
Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Chief Jide Ojuko, spoke at an interactive meeting with local government chieftains at the Obas’ Complex Hall in Abeokuta, the state capital.
It was a follow-up to an earlier parley with Governor Senator Ibikunle Amosun.
Ojuko said the meeting was an avenue to straighten rough edges with the various stakeholders, discuss challenges and proffer solutions to various challenges.
The commissioner said the present administration in Ogun State was passionate about the wellbeing of the residents, adding that it needed the cooperation of all to ensure that dividends of democracy were distributed to the grassroots.
The Senior Special Adviser (SSA) to the Governor on Political Affairs, Chief Derin Adebiyi, urged the chairmen to unite and avoid sentiments to ensure that the Rebuilding Mission of the present administration succeeded.
The Special Adviser to the Governor on Political Affairs, Musefiu Lamidi, and the Special Adviser on Intergovernmental Affairs, Mr. Tola Banjo, admonished the chairmen to work with party structures and complement the efforts of the Amosun administration so that dividends of democracy could easily be distributed to the grassroots.
The Chairman of Odogbolu CAC, Asiwaju Sina Ogunbambo and Tunde Oladunjoye of Ijebu East CAC, expressed appreciation to the government for creating the CAC as an avenue to strengthen local government administration.
They pledged to support the local council chairmen to improve internally generated revenue (IGR) and sustainability of the LCDAs.

Criminal charges laid over Hillsborough disaster

Britain's state prosecution service has announced that criminal charges will be laid against six people over the 1989 Hillsborough football stadium disaster. A total of 96 Liverpool fans died as the result of a crowd crush during an FA Cup semi-final at the Sheffield ground. David Duckenfield, a former senior officer who was in charge of police operations at Hillsborough on the day of the disaster, has been charged with the manslaughter by gross negligence of 95 men, women and children. He has not been not charged over the 96th casualty, who died four years after the disaster, because of legal time limits in force at the time. The other five people charged included other police officers, a lawyer who acted for the police, and a stadium safety officer. Charges include perverting the course of justice, contravening safety regulations and misconduct in public office.

Ekiti APC elders endorse zoning

The Ekiti State All Progressives Congress (APC) Elders’ Forum has thrown its weight behind governorship zoning to Ekiti South to ensure equity, justice and fair play among the three senatorial districts. This formed the kernel of a forum organized by a group, Itesiwaju Ekiti, a political platform of a former member of the House of Representatives and a governorship aspirant, Hon. Bamidele Faparusi, in Ode-Ekiti, headquarters of Gbonyin Local Government Area. ‘Give widows 5% social investment funds’

As the world celebrates International Widows Day (IWD), a non-governmental organisation, Helpline Foundation for the Needy, Abuja has advocated 5 percent of the federal government Social Investment Programme funds to be dedicated to widows to address the poverty and injustice they and their children face. The group observed that the four social investments programmes of the federal government did not capture the interest of widows in the society, just as the group called on government at all levels to dedicate special funds for establishment of small scale business for widows. Senate seeks suspension of new health centres

•Fed Govt told to present details of funding Senate has ordered the suspension of Federal Government’s plan to build new primary health centres in each of the wards across the country. The upper chamber asked relevant agencies involved in the building plan to furnish it with details offunding of the project. The Senate Committee on Primary Health and Communicable Diseases, which handed the suspension, said it was obvious that the project was not viable now due to paucity of fund. The committee chairman,Mao Ohuabunwa, at a meeting with officials of the agency, said funding of such policy would be a problem now. The committee noted that the said multi-billion naira project was not captured in the 2017 budget.
