Varsity sacks lecturer for sexual harassment

A lecturer in the Faculty of Education, Ebonyi State University (EBSU), has been sacked by the management.
The management also suspended Onwe Chinedu Ogah, of the Department of History and International Relations,  for alleged sexual harassment and extortion.
The students yesterday decried the alleged high rate of sexual harassment and extortion by lecturers.
Ogah is facing a disciplinary committee for alleged sexual harassment and extortion.
The Nation investigation showed that students allegedly paid between N10,000 and N30,000 to pass a particular course, or had sex with lecturers if they could not pay.
A victim, Chinenye Chike, alleged that she had carry-over because she failed to pay the N10,000 demanded by the lecturer or sleep with him.
Another victim, Sylvia Ibiam, alleged that after paying the money, the lecturer insisted she must sleep with him, and she refused.
“The lecturer punished me by hiding my project.”
The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Francis Idike, confirmed that sexual harassment and extortion were rampant in the institution.
He said: “A lecturer is on suspension. How can you sack somebody without going through stages? The disciplinary committee has completed its assignment and submitted it to the vice chancellor. I am studying the matter, after which I will send it to the management.
“I don’t have the total figure of such cases, but I know there are many of them. In fact, there was one we decided last week, based on sex for grade. A female lecturer was sacked. It happened in the Faculty of Education. Just last week, the council took a final decision on the recommendation of the committee.”

Gunmen kill policeman, NSCDC operative in Bayelsa

Gunmen have killed a policeman and an operative of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Bayelsa State. The assailants, suspected to be sea pirates, attacked a team of security officials on Friday on Ekebiri Waterways in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area (LGA) of the state. The attack came three weeks after suspected Niger Delta militants ambushed a houseboat operated by the Joint Task Force and killed a soldier and a civilian crew member. Reps praise NIPCO for boosting downstream

The House of Representatives Committee on Petroleum Resources (Downstream) has commended NIPCO for its acquisition of ExxonMobil’s 60 per cent equity in Mobil Oil Nigeria Plc. According to the lawmakers, the acquisition has demystified the impression of International Oil Companies (IOCs) that it is difficult for indigenous oil companies to market petroleum products. Alleged N3.2b laundering: Ex-governor gets new trial date

THE trial of a former Abia State Governor Orji Uzor Kalu was stalled yesterday due to the absence of Justice Mohammed Idris of the Federal High Court in Lagos. Justice Idris was said to be attended the ongoing judges’ conference in Abuja, which is held at the beginning of every new legal year. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) re-arraigned Kalu, Udeh Udeogu and Slok Nigeria Limited on 34 counts of laundering N3.2 billion. They pleaded not guilty. The alleged diversions were done between August 13,2003 and January 12, 2005, the prosecution said. The EFCC accused Slok of conniving with one Emeka Abone, said to be at large, to help Kalu retain the alleged stolen funds in its accounts. The offence is contrary to Section 17 (c) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act 2003 and punishable under Section 16 of the same Act. The trial has been fixed for October 3 to 6.
