Gana to deliver Oyo varsity’s convocation lecture

A former  Minister of Information, Prof Jerry Gana is to deliver the 9th convocation lecture of Ajayi Crowther University (ACU), Oyo, scheduled to hold on October 12. Mr. Alvan Ewuzie, a Senior Assistant Registrar, Public Relations, said this in a statement in Ibadan yesterday. He said that the politician and former minister of information would deliver a lecture entitled ‘Building a culture of academic excellence in Nigerian Universities.’ The lecture is scheduled to hold at the institution’s law auditorium. According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) three eminent personalities would be conferred with the honourary degrees during the convocation scheduled to hold on Oct. 13, in appreciation of their various contributions to the development of the state and the country. They are: Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi,  wife of Oyo State Governor, Mrs Florence Ajimobi, and a businessman, Chief Tunde Afolabi.

Airtel supports digital journalism training again

All is set for another digital journalism training sponsored by Airtel Nigeria under the aegis of The Journalism Clinic and facilitated by the widely-travelled digital journalism trainer, Dan Mason. Although 100 journalists will be trained this year, as was the case in 2015, this time around, data journalism will be added to the previous multimedia storytelling. According to Founder/Director of The Journalism Clinic, Taiwo Obe: “We decided that it would be more beneficial to add data journalism training to the curriculum this time as it has become important for journalists to be able to apply digital tools to break down the increasing deluge of data particularly from governments.” The plan, he added, is to train 50 multimedia storytellers and 50 data journalists in two locations – Lagos and Kaduna. “We are delighted to be sponsoring this training, for the second time, because we strongly believe that the more equipped our journalists are, the better for our society,” stated ...

Naira rebounds against dollar

The Naira on Tuesday, appreciated against the dollar at the parallel market. The Nigerian currency gained N2 to exchange at N365 to the dollar, stronger than N367 posted on Monday while the Pound Sterling and the Euro closed at N475 and N433. Trading at the Bureau De change (BDC) window saw the Naira closing at N362 to the dollar, while the Pound Sterling and the Euro traded at N473 and N433, respectively. At the investors’ window, the Naira was sold at N359.67 to the dollar, while it exchanged at N305.8 to the dollar at the interbank market. Traders said patronage was low at the parallel market. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports BDCs got the weekly foreign exchange auction from the CBN.

Lalong tasks Fed Gov on abandoned power projects

Plateau State governor, Simon Bako Lalong, has appealed to the federal government on the completion of abandoned power projects across the state so as to stimulate economic activities in the state. A curious detail came with the news of the arrest of big-time kidnapper Chukwudubem Onwuamadike, alias Evans. A report in  The Guardian  said:  ”Early bystanders claimed Evans had exchanged gunshots with the officials before he was captured. EFCC blocks firms’ N116m

Armed with a court order, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has  blocked over N116million belonging to the  House of Representatives Minority Leader   Leo Ogor. The cash is the outstanding sum in the accounts of five of the six companies owned by Ogor with which he secured contracts from some agencies as constituency projects. Apart from the freeze order, the EFCC is looking into a “curious” payment  of over N318million  to two of the  companies  by the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC). The  anti-graft agency is probing Ogor based on a petition against the House leadership by the suspended Appropriation Committee Chairman Abdulmumin Jibrin on alleged padding of 2016 Budget and insertion of bogus constituency projects.
