Police kill two highway robbers; recover luxury bus, cash, arms

Two persons suspected to have robbed an East bound luxury bus at the Ogbere (Ogun State) stretch of the Sagamu-Ore Expressway, were shot dead by men of the  Anti-robbery squad attached to the Ogebere-Ijebu Divisional Police Headquarters, Ogun State. Their suspects’ remains were dumped at the premises of the Ogbere Police station along with  the three Pump Action rifles, two local pistols and a machete recovered from them. Also, the sum of N166, 000:00k, handsets, laptop, wristwatches and other valuables snatched from the victims were recovered by the Police. The 34 passenger bus on the fleet of  the Chisco Investment company and marked Lagos AAA 649 XN, was said to have been attacked by the robbers around 1.a.m, who broke the windshields of the bus, forced their way in and evicted the driver before commandeering it into the bush. Excess light, heat can damage eyes

Dr Ayodeji Alade, an Ophthalmologist at the General Hospital, Omuaran, Kwara, has warned people against getting exposed to excess light and heat to avoid damage to cornea of the  eyes  resulting in blindness. Alade gave the warning in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Omu-Aran on Friday. He explained that exposure to excessive light and heat could lead to the growth, pterygium, an infection of the eye caused by dust, heat, smoke, pollen and wind. He said the disease occurred more often in people who lived in warm climates and spent a lot of time outdoors in sunny or windy environments. The expert further explained that symptoms of pterygium include redness, blurred vision, eye irritation and burning sensation or itches. According to Alade, other eye conditions such as cataracts, glaucoma, trachoma and presbyopia can be as a result of lifestyle, age, sickness or dirty environment. Okorocha bans Imo monarchs from speaking in English at official fora

Gov Rochas Okorocha of Imo has banned traditional rulers in the State from speaking in English at official functions and while conducting affairs at their palaces. Okorocha gave the directive while handing over letters of recognition and staffs of office to 19 newly recognized traditional rulers in the State in Owerri on Tuesday. He directed that every monarch must only speak in Igbo at functions and in their palaces, adding that interpreters could be employed if the need arises. The governor said this was in a bid to ensure that the Igbo language did not die as predicted in some quarters. He also told traditional rulers in the state to be agents of peace, progress and prosperity in their respective domains instead of being tools of disunity and destabilization.   Senior Advocates of Nigeria, Femi Falana and Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa, have waded into the dispute between the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and the Senator representing the FCT, Ireti Kingibe. The senior lawyers noted that the FCT minister in terms of execution of duties was not answerable to Kingibe or the National Assembly. The FCT lawmaker had warned Wike to desist from working without the supervision of the National Assembly. Kingibe also noted that the FCT minister does not have executive powers but must operate within the constitutional frameworks of the country’s legislative arm. Kingibe said, “You also have to remember that the minister of the FCT – I’m not sure we have had a former governor as a minister, I think we have had one. Some [former] governors may think that as an FCT minister, the minister does not have executive powers. Rodriguez joins Bayern Munich on £40m loan deal

Real Madrid playmaker James Rodriguez has signed for Bayern Munich on a two-year loan deal – in a move that reunites him with Italian manager Carlo Ancelotti. Rodriguez will have a medical with the German giants before completing his move to the Allianz Arena – in a deal which could cost up to £40million. Bayern will also have an option to buy the Colombia international permanently at the end of the loan deal on June 30, 2019. A member of the Nigeria Basketball Federation ( NBBF ), Retd. Col. Sam Ahmedu, on Monday said Nigeria’s participation in the FIBA Africa 3×3 Championship was a good exposure for the players. Ahmedu told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja that in spite of losing in the final matches to Mali, Nigeria still had a good outing. The Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) and the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU), both in Anambra State, have joined the nationwide strike of some academic unions. The institutions joined under the aegis of Joint Action Committee of Trade Unions comprising Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU), the Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Universities (SSANU) and the National Association of Academic technical (NAAS). Members of the unions held separate meetings in their institutions where the decision to join the national body was taken. At the end of the meeting at Ojukwu Varsity at Igbariam, the chairman of Joint Action Committee of Trade Unions at the school, Andrew Okeke, said the unions had joined the strike. The union leader described the strike as total and indefinite, adding that any member seen on the three campuses of the institution would be penalised.
