Family accuses police of obstructing justice over Lagos property

…Police: Possession was taken illegally  The family of a former Head of Service in Lagos, the late Mr. C.O. Bajulaiye, has accused the police of denying its members access to their late father’s house in spite of a court judgment authorising them to take possession. The family had approached the Lagos Magistrates Court in a bid to recover the property from a tenant, a company. On May 8, the court ordered the company to give up possession of the property made up of a five-bedroom detached house, a two-bedroom guest chalet, and three-room boys quarters on or before May 10. The company was also ordered to pay a “mesne profit” at the rate of N3million on the property located on 8, Agoro Odiyan Street, off Adeola Odeku Street, Victoria Island. However, the family, in a petition to the Commissioner of Police in Lagos, Mr Fatai Owoseni, accused the police of frustrating the enforcement of the judgment. Senate gives NPA four days for information on 282 missing vessels

The Senate on Thursday, gave the Managing Director, Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Hadiza Usman, four days to explain the whereabouts of over 282 vessels allegedly missing from the sea ports. Sen. Hope Uzodinma, Chairman, Senate’s Joint Committee on Customs, Excise and Tariff and Marine Transport, gave the ultimatum in Abuja, at an investigative hearing on N30 trillion lost through leakages in Customs and other agencies. Uzodinma, who expressed displeasure with the managing director for not honouring the committee’s two previous invitations, said the information on the vessels was imperative and must be available within four days. He threatened that the senate may be compelled to pursue a financial crime case against Usman should he fail to heed the committee’s directive. “We are looking for these vessels. Pensioners condemn agitations for breakup

THE Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) has asked those agitating for the country’s break up to stop and join hands with the government to promote unity. The union appealed to Acting President Yemi Osinbajo for the payment of the outstanding 18 months of 33  per cent pension arrears following the signing of the budget. In a statement signed by its General Secretary, Elder Actor Zal, the union praised the Federal Government for this month’s prompt payment of pensions to pensioners. SAN disagrees with Falana, insists Chief Judges can’t grant pardon

The debate over whether or not Chief Judges possess the power to grant pardon to awaiting trial detainees continued yesterday with a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Sebastine Hon insisting the Chief Judges cannot legally grant pardon. Hon spoke in reaction to argument credited to human rights lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN) to the effect that Chief Judges can grant pardon under the Prisons Act and the Criminal Justice (Release from Custody) (Special Provisions) Act. Falana had, in a counter-argument, faulted Hon’s position, which was widely reported in the Media on Monday. But, in a detailed analysis Tuesday, Hon insisted on his position, arguing among others, that the laws cited by Falana were unconstitutional. Julius Malema, leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters party (EFF) said 60 African National Congress (ANC) members in South Africa’s parliament will back a no-confidence vote against President Jacob Zuma if the ballot is secret. Toppling Zuma requires 50 of the 249 ANC Members of Parliament (MPs) to support the no-confidence motion and some have said publicly they want him removed, including former finance minister Pravin Gordhan, whose sacking in March triggered damaging debt ratings downgrades. Rivers East district has no senator, says Wike

Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike has said Rivers East has no senator. He spoke yesterday at  a Thanksgiving Service for Senator George Thompson Sekibo, at the St Thomas Anglican Church in Diobu. Sekibo was sacked from the National Assembly by the Court of Appeal last week. He accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) of destroying key national institutions. Wike said following APC’s negative governance style, the police and Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) have metamorphosed into rigging machines threatening the peace of the country. According to him, the Appeal Court judgment, which led to the loss of Rivers East mandate is a fallout of the “unfortunate illegal alliance  between the police and INEC”.
