S. Africa’s Malema says no fewer than 60 ANC MPs will turn on Zuma

Julius Malema, leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters party (EFF) said 60 African National Congress (ANC) members in South Africa’s parliament will back a no-confidence vote against President Jacob Zuma if the ballot is secret. Toppling Zuma requires 50 of the 249 ANC Members of Parliament (MPs) to support the no-confidence motion and some have said publicly they want him removed, including former finance minister Pravin Gordhan, whose sacking in March triggered damaging debt ratings downgrades. South Africa’s national assembly has 400 members. Malema, a firebrand politician known for his colorful language, said in an interview, he had received personal commitments that ANC MPs would dump Zuma. Malema, a former head of the ANC’s Youth League before his expulsion from the party, could plausibly still have plenty of contacts in the organization. “I personally spoke to more than 60 MPs of the ANC who have committed that if we give them a secret ballot they will deliver,” Ma...

Kenya: Police foils planned Somali militants attack

The Kenyan police said it arrested six men suspected of planning an attack sponsored by the al Shabaab militant group from neighboring Somalia. In recent weeks, the East African nation has lost 20 officers in various attacks, mostly on deserted roads in the vast northern region bordering Somalia, in which the militants used Improvised Explosive Devices. Joseph Boinnet, the Inspector-General Police, said in a statement that two of the suspects were Kenyans and the others were Somali nationals. Police also seized assembled explosives, four suicide vests and bomb-making materials such as TNT. “The six had been dispatched from Burhanche in Somalia by their commanders to launch attacks in Kenya,” Boinnet said. Kenyan security forces worked with their counterparts in Somalia to foil the attack and to capture the suspects. The captured men were being interrogated to establish the extent of the entire network, Boinnet said. Kenya has faced a constant security challenge from ac...

He said when the account was audited, it was discovered 15,600 litres of diesel, valued at N2.574 million, was not remitted to the company’s account. “Fingers pointed at the accused, because the missing money was detected at the diesel pump he was attached to,” Ogu said. He added that the case was reported at the police station and the accused was arrested. The offence contravened Section 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015. The accused pleaded not guilty. SAN disagrees with Falana, insists Chief Judges can’t grant pardon

The debate over whether or not Chief Judges possess the power to grant pardon to awaiting trial detainees continued yesterday with a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Sebastine Hon insisting the Chief Judges cannot legally grant pardon. Hon spoke in reaction to argument credited to human rights lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN) to the effect that Chief Judges can grant pardon under the Prisons Act and the Criminal Justice (Release from Custody) (Special Provisions) Act. Falana had, in a counter-argument, faulted Hon’s position, which was widely reported in the Media on Monday. But, in a detailed analysis Tuesday, Hon insisted on his position, arguing among others, that the laws cited by Falana were unconstitutional. Hon said: “For the avoidance of any doubt, section 35(4) of the 1999 Constitution has covered the field on what should be done to any person accused of an offence; and there is no room for any administrative action by the Judiciary. “Only judicial actions can...

Judge’s ill- health stalls Oduah’s debt suit

A Federal High Court sitting in Lagos on Thursday adjourned till October 19, hearing in a suit filed by Sterling Bank Plc against a former Minister of Aviation, Stella Oduah, over alleged indebtedness. Justice Ayokunle Faji adjourned the suit on account of ill health. The bank claimed that Oduah and her firm, Sea Petroleum and Gas company Limited, are indebted to it to the tune of $16.4 million and N100.5 million. The suit was earlier adjourned for hearing of all pending applications but Justice Faji told counsel on Thursday that he would only be able to take cases for arraignment and rulings. Further hearing was, therefore, fixed for October 19, after the court’s vacation. The suit was initially pending before Justice Abdulaziz Anka of the same court, but was eventually, reassigned to Justice Faji to begin afresh. In March, Justice Anka issued an order, restraining Oduah and her firms, from making any withdrawal from their account and those of three other companies domi...
