Shot in exotic locations like Cuba, Moscow and New York, the eighth instalment of the Fast and Furious renamed the Fate of the Furious is definitely an exciting blockbuster to be viewed more than just once. The movie which begins with a drag race in Cuba, where Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) emerges winner in other to save his mechanic cousin is more than enough thriller in the opening scene to sustain interest for regular on-screen action movie lover. The movie, which has grossed over a billion dollars in other territories for a worldwide total of $1.231 billion, against a production budget of $250 million ( $350 million, including marketing costs) is Universal Pictures’ most ambitious worldwide distribution release in the studio’s history. Packed with action in every scene, the Fate of the Furious is action-gripping as it is expected to make any audience jolt in their seats with new stunts, replacing the main action of cars jumping out of pla...
IN the past few days, the social media has been buzzing with stories of a supposed telephone conversation between Governor Kashim Shettima of Borno State and Governor Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun State on the state of the nation. In the conversation, a vitriolic Gov Shettima called the bluff of separatist movements, particularly south-easterners, and ramblingly advocated for synergy between the Southwest and the North. But as the aides of the Borno governor said — and they are more believable — the voice on the supposed telephone call neither sounded like that of the governor nor did the cadence resemble anything close to that of the governor. They attribute the impersonation to 2019 political machinations designed to undermine the governor. In the call, Mr Amosun was also portrayed as a long-suffering, reticent man on the other end who could hardly get in a few words compared with the Niagara from Borno. His silences and pauses were telling, and he seemed at pains to rebut the trencha...
•‘Second term call hasty’ Nobel Laureate Prof Wole Soyinka has added his voice to the on-going agitations for restructuring of the country, saying that Nigeria is over-centralised. The eminent writer also gave his backing to the clamour for the decetralisation of the police. “My own position is that people shouldn’t allow themselves be put up by those who try to cheat on the expression, ‘restructuring.’ It doesn’t matter by what name you call it. We all know that this nation was deconstructed and what we live in right now, as a nation, is not allowing structuring that expresses the true will of Nigerians,” he said. Soyinka spoke yesterday in Lagos, when he announced the 10 Nigerian writers, who would be leaving for Lebanon in a cultural exchange programme, The Sail Project, between The Wole Soyinka Foundation and Cedar Institute, University of Lebanon. According to him, every Nigerian knows what restructuring is all about, whether it is called reconfiguring, return to...
WHILE Angelina Jolie continues to wow the audience with new movie, First They Killed My Father, at the ongoing Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), there is a deep reflection for Nigeria and other African countries with regions, asking for restructuring or independence in ways other than dialogue. The film is another strong representation which follows Best of No Nation’s outing at 2015 TIFF. Whether for religious or ethnic reason, proponents of war usually hook up to cause that promotes a change by force. This is what happens in First They Killed My Father. However, were like other ethnic or religious wars, innocent people, women and children are more at the receiving end. Again, like Beast of No Nation, this film relays the undue exposure of kids to violence, first as victims of war, and also as kid soldiers. But what makes First They Killed My Father super unique is attempt to institute a system of government where everyone is economically equal but with with un...
Suits are a work wear staple in the wardrobes of most professional women, either because it’s a required part of your office dress code, or you simply love how you look in one. It can however get boring. Here are nine ways you can put a new spin on your suit game, simply by playing with color, silhouettes and accessories. Consider other colours aside Black and Navy Even though you don’t have to wear the rainbow, but adding more colour to your work wardrobe rather than the usual neutral palette is a great way to go. Rich colors like burgundy or olive green is refreshing without being too crazy. Wear a Printed Shirt Underneath If you’re wearing this in a work environment, make sure the neck is cut a bit higher or cover up with a brooch. But the general idea is that layering a blazer over a printed blouse makes an otherwise plain gray suit much more fashionable, and modern. Consider a Looser Silhouette There’s a time and place for fitted pencil skirts, but how can you s...
Two members of a robbery gang that opened fire on the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Ogbere Division, Adeyinka Akingbade, have been arrested by operatives of Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad (FSARS), Ogun State. The Nation learnt that Adeyinka was injured by the suspects when he and a team of policemen responded to a distress call that robbers invaded a hotel in Itele-Ijebu. The suspects ambushed him and shot him at close range. Spokesman Abimbola Oyeyemi said in a statement that Police Commissioner Ahmed Iliyasu, on getting a report on the shooting, directed FSARS, led by Uba Adam, to arrest the hoodlums. Said he: “The FSARS team swung into action and their efforts paid off after six hours when the robbers’ hideout was located. “On sighting the police, the hoodlums engaged them in a gun battle, which lasted about an hour. “At the end of the encounter, two of the robbers, Wasiu Ganiyu and Azeez Komolafe, were arrested. Their leader, Mungo Park, was shot dead. ...
A curious detail came with the news of the arrest of big-time kidnapper Chukwudubem Onwuamadike, alias Evans. A report in The Guardian said: ”Early bystanders claimed Evans had exchanged gunshots with the officials before he was captured. A ritual where a broom was inserted into his private organ was then performed as a sort of spiritual disarming before he was handcuffed.” Did this happen? If it did, what does it say about the Nigeria Police Force and its methods? If it didn’t happen, what does it say about news gathering and news presentation? The piece of information about the “ritual” reinforced the thriller, no doubt. A police source was quoted as saying: “Someone called and gave information on his whereabouts. When we got there, he hid inside the roof of the house. He could not withstand the pressure on him from the police. While Vampire was the most deadly kidnapper in the history of Nigeria and was caught some months ago during a gun battle, Evans rem...

Brazil is engaged in World Trade Organisation(WTO) committee talks aimed at eliminating any potential barriers to poultry and pork exports. The meeting is in line with an upcoming summit in December, the next opportunity to advance agreements benefiting its farm exports, the head of the WTO said. Brazil has proposed the adoption of scientific criteria related to sanitary standards in the food trade in a WTO committee, Director-General Roberto Azevedo told a conference on Tuesday. Brazil and the European Union have an interest in advancing talks to reduce subsidies distorting trade, although no agreement is in sight yet, he added. The EU, Brazil and three other Latin American countries introduced a WTO proposal in July aimed at reducing farm subsidies. “For it to be possible to reduce subsidies it is necessary that all countries change. Otherwise it is like unilateral disarmament,” Azevedo said. The WTO will hold a ministerial conference in Buenos Aires in early December. ...
