Governments and the church have a vital role to play in tackling insecurity and religious intolerance in the country, it has been learnt. This was the centre of discussions yesterday at a symposium organised by the Cathedral Church of Saint Jude at Ebute Meta in Lagos. It was part of activities to celebrate its 150th anniversary with theme: Tackling insecurity and Religious Intolerance: Agenda for the State and Church. Venerable Okey Ifomu, of the church, said the first step governments should take to tackle insecurity and religious intolerance is setting personal examples in the way they run governance. He said: “Governments must be fair to the various interest groups in the polity. If Nigeria desires to live in peace and security, it must sincerely address injustice and oppression. The clamour for a restructuring of the country and the obvious resistance of key elements of the present Federal Government to the demand can only stoke the fire of insecurity by reinforcing sep...
Accident, Investigation Bureau (AIB) Commissioner Akin Olateru has urged members of the National Association of Aircraft Pilots and Engineers (NAAPE) to be more professional in the discharge of their duties. The AIB boss disclosed this at the weekend when NAAPE leadership, led by its President, Abednego Galadima, visited him in his office at the Murtala Muhamed Airport (MMA), Lagos. He lauded NAAPE for its professionalism in dealing with the management of various organisations in the industry, adding that their attitude had brought stability to the sector. After assessing the anti-graft agencies, stakeholders have faulted their methods of fighting corruption. They suggested ways the agencies can enhance their performance. Assistant Editor LEKE SALAUDEEN writes. Stakeholders have faulted the Federal Government’s anti-corruption strategy, saying the approach is responsible for its limited success. They have identified the problems that require urgent attention, if the fight is to achieve its objectives. For instance, the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) said the framework for anti-corruption crusade is defective in structure and does not make for effectiveness of the anti-graft agencies. The NBA believes that a lot needs to be done to improve the general institutional framework for the campaign. NBA President, Abubakar Mahmoud (SAN), said: “Though some successes have been recorded, especially with the advent of the whistle-blowing policy, it must be remembered that reliance on the new policy is a signal that the policing and anti-cr...

To achieve Lagos State’s plan to eliminate the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV/AIDS) by 2030, the state aids control agency (LSACA) is screening of over 36,000 residents of Ikorodu. According to LSACA Director- General/CEO Dr. Oluseyi Temowo, who spoke at Ijede in Ikorodu, the story of HIV/AIDS has changed because 30 years ago, HIV was unknown and it killed a lot of people. “But today, HIV is no longer a death sentence; rather it is a life sentence. People can live their normal life because there are drugs, prevention and control measures put in place. So, if anybody dies of HIV/AIDS, it is because he or she did not take care of himself or herself or did not avail himself or herself of drugs and proper treatment,”Temowo said. He said the exercise in Ikorodu would be replicated in other parts of the state, adding that the reason for the exercise was to stop mother-to-child transmission and achieve the target of Vision 90-90-90 initiative by 2020. “So lon...

Lawyers yesterday said the federal government can block the funding of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) through diplomatic means. The government had said IPOB gets its funding from France, which it described as the group’s international headquarters. But France denied having anything to do with the secessionist group. Director-General of West African Institute for Financial and Economic Management (WAIFEM), Prof. Akpan Ekpo, urged the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU) to track financial flows to IPOB. He said the agency should work closely with all core regulators of financial, other-financial institutions, designated non- financial businesses and professions to ensure that funding for IPOB is blocked. He said the federal government can also inform the countries involved to instruct their banks to stop receiving or send money to IPOB. “If the Federal Government tells the international community and their banks to stop doing banking transactions with IP...
The Police command in Borno has confirmed the death of two persons in a suspected Boko Haram attack along the Maiduguri-Damboa highway. Mr Damian Chukwu, the Borno Police Commissioner, who confirmed this on Tuesday said that the dead persons included a police man and a truck driver. “You would recall that since the Maiduguri-Damboa highway was reopened, motorists ply the road strictly on military escort. “Initially it was only the military that provides the escort, but later the police was invited to join,” Chukwu said. He said that the convoy left Maiduguri with the military in the front while the police was at the rear. “The convoy had about 200 vehicles among which included an 80-seater bus conveying a newly deployed Mobile Police Unit from Oghara in Delta heading for Askira Uba one of the newly liberated communities. “The convoy also had a burial party of a late Special Investigation Bureau police woman who died last week,” Chukwu said.
