Customs generates N239bn in Q1 2017

The Nigerian Custom Service (NCS) generated a total sum of N239.4billion in the first three months of this year, figures obtained from the Federal Ministry of Finance have revealed.
The figure is contained in a document showing activities in the Ministry of Finance in the last two years.
According to the document, Customs revenue performance for the first quarter of this year exceeded its target of N193.2billion.
It said: “This performance was achieved through a reform programme aimed at restructuring the agency, re-orientation of its officers, removing defects and adopting simplified procedures in its activities.
“The Customs collected N904.07billion in 2015 against a target of N944.4billion, the total collection in 2016 was N898.67billion against the target amount of N973.3billion.
“Between January and March 2017, the Customs was able to generate N239.4billion, thereby exceeding the target of N193.22billion set for the period.”
The Service also said it had complied with a presidential directive to deliver all seized perishable goods to the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) affected by the insurgency in Borno, Yobe, Adamawa and Benin camps.

Boko Haram: Child victim survives surgery, begins to walk

A six-year old Boko Haram victim, Ali Ahmadu, has survived a corrective surgery in his spinal cord. He can now walk, after 14 days in the hospital. While being ferried to Dubai on September 10, all he could mutter repeatedly in Hausa was:  “Ina so insake tafiya da kafana…Don Allah ataimakamu…Don Allah. Ina so in je makaranta”.  (“I want to begin to walk with my legs again. For God’s sake, assist me. I want to go to school”). Battle over traditional stool claims one life in Ondo

One person has reportedly died in the crisis  in Ugbo community  at Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State, over the Olugbo of Ugbo stool. Property estimated at millions of naira were said to have been destroyed. It was learnt that buildings, vehicles, boats and other valuables were set ablaze during the clash between supporters of the Olugbo, Oba Frederick Akinruntan, and the former occupant of the stool, Adebanjo Mafimisebi. A middle-aged woman, Bidemi Mafimisebi, and others were reportedly injured in the clash, which lasted several hours. It was learnt that Mafimisebi, who was removed by the Supreme Court on January 12, after occupying the throne for 25 years, was allegedly scheming to return to the throne. After Mafimisebi’s removal, the Ojadele Ruling House, headed by Prince Robert Nana, unanimously selected and presented Akinruntan as the candidate for the vacant stool on November 4, 2008. Osinbajo opens 60, 000 Metric Tonnes Fertilizer Plant in Edo

Zenith Bank raises $2.1b via Eurobond

Zenith Bank Plc has raised $2.1 billion through Eurobond 2022 issue. It was more than 300 per cent oversubscribed. The $500 million five-year senior unsecured benchmark bond (144A/REGS) was issued by the Tier-1 lender on the Irish Stock Exchange. The bank’s Eurobond issue recorded success on three counts: pricing, subscription level and global appeal. Details of the issue show that the subscription level makes the issue highest by any non-sovereign and non-supranational company in sub-Saharan Africa. The issue, the lender said, is in addition to the existing $500 million which matures in April, 2019. The bond was issued at par with both coupon rate and yield to maturity rate priced at 7.375 per cent, representing 50 basis points better than the sovereign of 7.875 per cent. The rating of both the sovereign and Zenith Bank is B+ with the bond issue also rated B/B+. N760.17b refund: NLC to name indicted governors

Labour laments 5% payment to consultants WORKERS are angry with governors who blew their state’s share of the N760.17 billion Paris Club loan refund. President Muhammadu Buhari’s comment on how states failed to pay salaries despite the huge cash injection has provoked the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).  It is threatening to “name and shame” governors who failed to spend the refund on salaries and pension. No tension in Kaduna, say govt, police

Kaduna State government and the police yesterday dispelled rumour of tension. There had been rumour from outside the state since Monday that Kaduna was on fire, making relations of residents to phone their loved ones. At a meeting with Igbo and Yoruba communities, Police Commissioner Agyole Abeh advised residents to go about their activities, as there was no crisis. He said: “There is no crisis in Kaduna. The state is peaceful. I advise people to go about their activities. “Don’t be apprehensive, the rumour is baseless and unfounded. Top ‘Boko Haram terrorist’, Aliko, arrested

A suspected Boko Haram terrorist, Aliyu Ahmed, alias Aliko is now in army custody following his arrest in Bauchi State. Army spokesman, Brigadier General Sani Usman, confirmed yesterday that Ahmed was arrested on Friday by troops of 33 Brigade, following a tip-off in Yuga village in Toro Local Government Area of the state, where he has been in hiding. The head coach of the Nigeria female U20 team, Christopher Danjuma, has said he has 70 per cent knowledge of how the Falconets ’ opponent, Tanzania, will play the African qualifier for France 2018 on Saturday.
