Alleged N3.2b laundering: Ex-governor gets new trial date

THE trial of a former Abia State Governor Orji Uzor Kalu was stalled yesterday due to the absence of Justice Mohammed Idris of the Federal High Court in Lagos. Justice Idris was said to be attended the ongoing judges’ conference in Abuja, which is held at the beginning of every new legal year. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) re-arraigned Kalu, Udeh Udeogu and Slok Nigeria Limited on 34 counts of laundering N3.2 billion. They pleaded not guilty. The alleged diversions were done between August 13,2003 and January 12, 2005, the prosecution said. The EFCC accused Slok of conniving with one Emeka Abone, said to be at large, to help Kalu retain the alleged stolen funds in its accounts. The offence is contrary to Section 17 (c) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act 2003 and punishable under Section 16 of the same Act. The trial has been fixed for October 3 to 6.

Brazil to lift meat trade restrictions- WTO chief

Brazil is engaged in World Trade Organisation(WTO) committee talks aimed at eliminating any potential barriers to poultry and pork exports. The meeting is in line with an upcoming summit in December, the next opportunity to advance agreements benefiting its farm exports, the head of the WTO said. Brazil has proposed the adoption of scientific criteria related to sanitary standards in the food trade in a WTO committee, Director-General Roberto Azevedo told a conference on Tuesday. Brazil and the European Union have an interest in advancing talks to reduce subsidies distorting trade, although no agreement is in sight yet, he added. The EU, Brazil and three other Latin American countries introduced a WTO proposal in July aimed at reducing farm subsidies. “For it to be possible to reduce subsidies it is necessary that all countries change. Otherwise it is like unilateral disarmament,” Azevedo said. The WTO will hold a ministerial conference in Buenos Aires in early December. ...

NTDC develops roadmap to boost domestic tourism

The Nigeria Tourism Development Corporation (NTDC) has developed a roadmap to promote tourism assets. A unique brand logo will be used as a marketing tool. Speaking with reporters in Abuja at the weekend,the Director-General of the NTDC, Mr Folorunsho Folarin-Coker, said: “The brand is an ambitious attempt at promoting tourism in Nigeria that aims to shape the narrative on Nigeria as a major destination for tourism, hospitality, arts and entertainment in Africa.” He said the roadmap would showcase the vibrant and friendly energy of Nigerians through different creative expressions,leverage on the abundant soft power to celebrate Nigeria’s heritage and promote the natural and cultural tourism assets, destinations and people. To-promoters  of the Imperial International Business City (IIBC), the Elegushi Royal Family (ERF), has said the IIBC is designed to align with the Cleaner LagosIntiative (CLI) of Lagos State in line with the new global order. 11 die as rains pound cities

Homes submerged in Lagos, Suleja, Ibadan Ikoyi, Lekki, others thrown into darkness Floods hit many Nigerian cities after long hours of rainfall at the weekend. There were deaths. Homes were  flooded. Eleven people died in Suleja and other towns in Niger State. Many parts of Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, were flooded. Residents of highbrow Victoria Island, Lekki and Ajah in Lagos were yesterday waiting for the floods to recede. They were warned to vacate the flood-prone area because of the expected intense rains. Many parts of Lagos Island have been thrown into darkness because the floods soaked power facilities. Niger State was worst hit by the floods after five hours of rainfall. Nine people died in Checheniya and one in Kuala, Suleja. Another person died in Ayin-Nassarrawa in Tara Local Government Area of Niger State. Houses were submerged.
