Lassa Fever kills pupil in Jos

One pupil of the Federal Government College, Langtang, Plateau State, has died of Lassa fever. Two others have been hospitalised.
Commissioner for Health Kuden Deyin, who confirmed this to News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) yesterday, said: “Yes, there was an outbreak of Lassa Fever at the Federal Government College, Langtang; it has claimed one life, while two others are in the hospital.”
According to him, four pupils were rushed from the school clinic to the Jos University Teaching Hospital.
“The pupils showed symptoms of Lassa Fever and we immediately took their blood samples to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, where three tested positive.
“One of those who tested positive is dead, while the other two are still on admission at JUTH,” he said.
Deyin said the government had met with the school principal and advised her to halt resumption from the mid-term break.
The commissioner advised families with children in the school to observe them and report any symptom to JUTH, Plateau Specialist Hospital or the Bingham University Teaching Hospital.
“Any child, who manifests symptoms of fever and bleeding from any part of the body, should be rushed to any of these hospitals for prompt evaluation,” he added.

The EU, Brazil and three other Latin American countries introduced a WTO proposal in July aimed at reducing farm subsidies. “For it to be possible to reduce subsidies it is necessary that all countries change. Senate to Buhari: Call Sagay to order

Says “He’s a loose cannon” The Senate yesterday asked President Muhammadu Buhari to rein in the chairman of the Presidential Action Committee on Anti-Corruption (PACAC),  Professor Itse  Sagay. Father sexually assaults daughter for seven years in Kano

A Kano Magistrates’ Court on Friday ordered the remand of one Ibrahim Mohammed, 56, in prison custody, accused of having sexual intercourse with his daughter for seven years. Ibrahim, who lives at Hausawa Quarters Kano, is standing trial on a two-count charge of procuring minor and incest. The prosecutor, Insp. Aluta Mijinyawa, told the court that the accused began to sexually assault the girl in 2010 when she was just seven years old. He said Ibrahim had been having sex with the minor since the death of her mother in 2010, adding, “the victim was seven year’s then, now a 14-year-old girl.” Mijinyawa further told the court that the girl, having now grown up “to know what is good and bad,” resisted the father, who threatened to harm her. FG: Universities to get separate interest generating account

The federal government(FG) has said it was ready to bend backward to create a separate interest generating account for university endowment, research grant and other sources of funding for universities in view of the peculiarities of some of the sources of funding, but was not ready to exclude any sector from the Treasury Single Account system. The government also said that it has ordered a staff audit of workers employed by the universities since January 2016,pointing out that the employment of such staff by university managers without recourse to budgetary provision and permission from relevant agencies was largely responsible for the shortfall in salaries of university workers. Security man jailed 10 years for manslaughter

A Lagos High Court on Thursday sentenced a 33-year-old security guard, Emmanuel Ajeoge, to 10 years imprisonment for manslaughter. Justice Raliat Adebiyi handed down the sentence after convicting Ajeoge for the death of a young lady, Gloria Okhiran, through accidental discharge of a local gun. Ajeoge was initially arraigned on a one count charge of murder contrary to Sections 319(1) of the Criminal Code laws of Lagos state 2011 but was convicted for manslaughter. Justice Adebiyi said, “The court finds the defendant not guilty of murder charge on the grounds that the evidence before it does not prove beyond reasonable doubt that there was an intention to commit murder. “The defendant is hereby found guilty of manslaughter contrary to Sections 317 of the Criminal laws of Lagos State, 2003.” The judge said the defendant, who knew he had an unlicensed gun, ought to have handled it cautiously in order to avert such dangers.
