Taekwondo: Nigeria’s Otuadinma earns WTF Grand Prix Invitation

The World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) has invited Nigeria’s Uzoamaka Otuadinma for the World Taekwondo Grand Prix Series, scheduled for Rabat, Morocco between Sept. 27 and Sept. 28.

The Grand Prix Series is a G-4 ranked event exclusively for the top ranked athletes in the world who compete for ranking points and prize money.
The Nigeria Taekwondo Federation (NTF) said in a statement on Tuesday in Lagos that Otuadinma’s performances in major international championships and world ranking earned her the invitation for the prestigious event.
The statement quoted the federation’s president, Margaret Binga as saying that Otuadinma had won the African championship in 2015 at the 2015 All African Games in Congo.
It noted that Otuadinma failed to qualify for the 2016 Rio Olympics in the + 67 kg after coming second at the Olympic qualifiers.
However, she emerged African Champion at the 2017 World Championships and Korea Opens, which earned her the vital world ranking points.
The News Agency Nigeria reports that prior to Otuadinma’s invitation, Chika Chukwumerije has remained the only Nigerian to have participated in three Grand Prix series.
Cote D’Ivoire, Tunisia, Egypt, Niger Republic and Morocco have better appearances than Nigeria at the series.
The Grand Prix was introduced by the international body in 2013 to provide a homogeneous system for qualification to the Olympic Games.
