Amosun, monarch call for caution on ‘Oro festival’ as new Poly berths in Ogun

Governor Ibikunle Amosun and the Olu Ilaro and Paramount Ruler of Yewaland, Oba Kehinde Olugbenle on yesterday called for moderation in the observation of Oro festival and other traditional practices in Yewaland to allow developmental initiatives in the area to thrive. Amosun and Oba Okugbenle made this call at the foundation laying for the newly established Ogun State Polytechnic, situated in Ipokia in Ipokia Local Government Area of the state.
In his speech at the site of the main campus of the polytechnic in Ijaye-Okeeyinbo, Ipokia, Amosun appealed to the traditionalists to observe their traditions with the safety and comfort of prospective students of the institution in mind. He urged the people to limit the observance of ‘Oro festival’ which the area is known for, to midnights. Amosun explained that it is when development is allowed in any community that the culture and tradition of such community can also be developed. He said, “We have our tradition and culture but we must moderate it.
We will do our ‘Oro festival’ but it is better done in the dead of the night because we want development. “We don’t want a situation where students will resume and their movements will be restricted at times when they should be in school. It is when we have development that our culture and tradition can be developed. “We all have traditions when we were young, many of those shrines we grew up to know have paved way for development while many traditions have been modernised. It is when these new students are accommodated that the tradition will be developed.” Also, Oba Olugbenle advised all the Obas and village heads in the area to moderate traditions and apply wisdom in order to allow for smooth running of the new institution.
