LAUTECH resumes today


The Governing Council of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) at Ogbomoso in Oyo State has approved resumption of activities on the institution’s campuses from today.
A statement by the Registrar and Secretary to Council, Jacob A. Agboola, said students could return to school on September 25, while full academic activities, details of which Senate will announce, will begin after the Independence anniversary holiday.
The council thanked the governors of Oyo and Osun states, Abiola Ajimobi and Rauf Aregbesola, for agreeing to support the university with funds to enable it return to normal work and reinvigorate its capacities for accelerated and sustainable growth and development.
It also hailed  stakeholders for their understanding and support.
The council urged students, workers, parents and the public to show greater faith and dedication to the wellbeing of the institution.

FRSC deploys 33,000 personnel for Sallah

The Federal Road Safety Corps has approved the deployment of 33,000 regular and special marshals, 859 patrol vehicles, 106 ambulances, 267 motorbikes and 22 tow trucks for the 2017 Eid-el-kabir celebrations. This is to address wrong road usage by motorists which results in a high number of crashes during festivities. The Corps Public Education Officer, Bisi Kazeem, emphasized that the operation will focus on traffic control, speeding, dangerous driving/overtaking, clearance of road obstructions, seatbelt use violation, zero tolerance for use of telephone while driving, lane indiscipline and route violation among others as these have been identified as reoccurring factors of Road Traffic Crashes. Police arrest 100 suspected robbers, others in Anambra

The Anambra State Police Command yesterday paraded 100 suspected criminals for alleged robbery, child trafficking and cultism. Following increased criminal activities across the state, Police Commissioner Garba Baba Umar warned vehicle owners to stop covering their number plates and avoid using sirens. The police said the suspects were arrested at Nnewi, Awada in Onitsha, Agulu in Anaocha Local Government Area as well as Obosi in Idemili North Local Government Area. Some of the items recovered from them included charms, AK-47 rifles, locally-made pistols, machetes, axes, live cartridges, pump action guns and six rounds of 9mm live ammunitions. Julius Malema, leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters party (EFF) said 60 African National Congress (ANC) members in South Africa’s parliament will back a no-confidence vote against President Jacob Zuma if the ballot is secret. Homes submerged in Lagos, Suleja, Ibadan Ikoyi, Lekki, others thrown into darkness Floods hit many Nigerian cities after long hours of rainfall at the weekend. There were deaths. Homes were  flooded. Eleven people died in Suleja and other towns in Niger State. Many parts of Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, were flooded. Residents of highbrow Victoria Island, Lekki and Ajah in Lagos were yesterday waiting for the floods to recede. They were warned to vacate the flood-prone area because of the expected intense rains. MOHBAD: FRESH-FM BANS NAIRA MARLEY SONGS

  A privately owned radio broadcast station, Fresh FM 106.9 FM, Ado in Ekiti State, on Tuesday morning, banned the playing of songs by Nigerian singer, Azeez Fashola, popularly known as Naira Marley, from airing on the station till further notice. The radio station disclosed this in a post shared on its Instagram handle (@freshfm1069adoekiti) and signed by its Head of production and Music Content, Oluwaseunfunmi Williams. The ban follows the death of Nigerian singer Ilerioluwa Oladimeji, popularly known as MohBad, and criticism surrounding Naira Marley. Oral sex is producing dangerous gonorrhoea and a decline in condom use is helping it to spread, the World Health Organization says. It is warning that if you contract gonorrhoea, it is now much harder to treat and in some cases impossible. The sexually transmitted infection is rapidly developing resistance to antibiotics. Experts said the situation was "fairly grim" with few new drugs on the horizon. Around 78 million people pick up the STI each year and it can cause infertility. The World Health Organization (WHO) analysed data from 77 countries and it showed gonorrhoea's resistance to antibiotics was widespread. Dr Teodora Wi said there had even been three cases - in Japan, France and Spain - where the infection was completely untreatable. "Gonorrhoea is a very smart bug, every time you introduce a new class of antibiotics to treat gonorrhoea, the bug becomes resistant," she said.
