Resumption: Schools told to watch visitors, hire professionals

As schools resume for the 2017/2018 academic session, school administrators have been told to safeguard their schools by monitoring visitors and instituting a functional information monitoring system.
Principals, Vice principals, counsellors and hostel masters heard this at a workshop organised by the Lagos State Ministry of Education.
In his paper titled: “The role of principals, vice principals, teachers and students in a safe environment”, a security expert, Mr Rawlings Igelugbo, said schools should have policies on how to manage visitors and strangers.
He said keeping visitors and strangers in the school environment unnecessarily gives time for the criminally minded to study the environment.  He also warned against siting schools in vulnerable locations.
To avoid becoming targets, Igelugbo warned parents to desist from unguided display of wealth and over exposure of children and family members.
Though criminals take time to study, plan, execute and get-away from the scene, Igelugbo said the process could be thwarted before the criminals get away if members of the school community are vigilant and pro-active, urging them to raise alarm when they suspect strange movement.
He advised schools against using untrained people as guards; while ensuring profiles of employees are well documented.
Speaking on “The roles and expectations of security agencies in securing lives and properties in our schools”, the Lagos State Police Commissioner, Mr. Imohimi Edgal, said the police had taken delivery of sophisticated equipment to catch criminals in the state.
Imohimi, who was represented by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of State Criminal Investigation Department, Mr Bolaji Salami, said the police had destroyed over 200 camps used by kidnappers.
