U.S pledges support for FG’s anti-graft campaign

Police arrest two over unlawful possession of firearms

Two suspects have been arrested in Pasali Kuje Area Council of FCT over unlawful possession of firearms. The suspects – Suleiman Salisu and Salisu Awolu – were arrested by police detectives at about 03:15 a.m. on Monday. Exhibits recovered from them included one locally-made pistol and a cutlass. The spokesman of the FCT police command, Anjuguri Manzah, disclosed these in a statement on Tuesday. The statement reads: “As part of proactive crime prevention measures deployed by the FCT Police Command to make the Federal Capital Territory safe and secure for all, police detectives attached to Kuje Division acting on tip have arrested two suspects over unlawful possession of firearm.” “The FCT Commissioner of Police, Musa Kimo, has ordered that the suspects and exhibits be transferred to the Command Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department for discreet investigation.”

Lagos upgrades 40 PHC Centres to cater for sexual assault case

…Trains Health Workers In a renewed effort to ensure that victims of all forms of sexual assault receive adequate medical assistance, the Lagos State Government has upgraded 40 Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) across the State to cater for all related cases. This is just as the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Response Team (DSVRT) in partnership with the Ministry of Health and the Primary Health Care Board, has stepped up efforts to implement the already launched the Sexual Assault Standing Order and Sexual Assault Evidence Examination Kit also known as rape kits. Coordinator of DSVRT, Mrs. Titilola Vivour-Adeniyi who spoke at a recent training session for health workers of PHCs, said the Centres have been empowered to render 24-hour service, laboratory testing, HIV Counselling and Testing, and Maternal and Child Health Services. Killer pastor still in custody – Police

Reacting to speculations that a pastor arrested for the alleged abduction and murder of a baby girl last week in Calabar, Cross River, has been released, the state police command said on Tuesday the suspect is still in custody and would be charged to court. The pastor of God’s Commandments Ministry along Atamunu Street, Calabar, Mr. Tony Obo, was arrested last Thursday for allegedly abducting and killing a one- year- and -seven month old baby, Success, for ritual purposes. The police said items recovered from the pastor included a human heart suspected to be that of the abducted baby, some charms, fetish items and pictures of various persons among others. A branch of the church, along Abua Street in Calabar, was demolished by enraged residents on Friday. A suspected Boko Haram terrorist, Aliyu Ahmed, alias Aliko is now in army custody following his arrest in Bauchi State. Army spokesman, Brigadier General Sani Usman, confirmed yesterday that Ahmed was arrested on Friday by troops of 33 Brigade, following a tip-off in Yuga village in Toro Local Government Area of the state, where he has been in hiding. The army also said it intercepted four child traffickers and 19 under aged children in Yobe State. “He was found to be in possession of one single barrel gun and one Dane gun. “During preliminary interrogation, he confessed that he actively participated in several Boko Haram terrorists’ attacks and also owned an AK-47 Rifle which he lost during one of the attacks they carried out in 2016. “His interrogation continued,” Usman said. Senate seeks suspension of new health centres

•Fed Govt told to present details of funding Senate has ordered the suspension of Federal Government’s plan to build new primary health centres in each of the wards across the country. The upper chamber asked relevant agencies involved in the building plan to furnish it with details offunding of the project. The Senate Committee on Primary Health and Communicable Diseases, which handed the suspension, said it was obvious that the project was not viable now due to paucity of fund. The committee chairman,Mao Ohuabunwa, at a meeting with officials of the agency, said funding of such policy would be a problem now. The committee noted that the said multi-billion naira project was not captured in the 2017 budget. The committee said the N3 million provided for each of the existing primary health centres in the 2016 budget barely paid the salaries of the health personnel in some local governments. Melaye’s recall: INEC to release revised timetable on Monday

THE Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) said it will on Monday release a revised timetable for the recall of senator representing Kogi West Dino Melaye. This followed Monday’s court ruling, which gave the commission the nod to continue with the recall process. With the legal hurdle removed, National Commissioner and member, Information and Voter Education Committee (IVEC) Mallam Mohammed Haruna said yesterday in a statement that INEC will release the revised timetable on Monday. INEC had commenced the process of Melaye’s recall following a petition by a group from his senatorial zone. But the senator went to court to halt the process. No tension in Kaduna, say govt, police

Kaduna State government and the police yesterday dispelled rumour of tension. There had been rumour from outside the state since Monday that Kaduna was on fire, making relations of residents to phone their loved ones. At a meeting with Igbo and Yoruba communities, Police Commissioner Agyole Abeh advised residents to go about their activities, as there was no crisis. He said: “There is no crisis in Kaduna. The state is peaceful. I advise people to go about their activities. “Don’t be apprehensive, the rumour is baseless and unfounded.
