11 die as rains pound cities

Homes submerged in Lagos, Suleja, Ibadan Ikoyi, Lekki, others thrown into darkness Floods hit many Nigerian cities after long hours of rainfall at the weekend. There were deaths. Homes were  flooded. Eleven people died in Suleja and other towns in Niger State. Many parts of Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, were flooded. Residents of highbrow Victoria Island, Lekki and Ajah in Lagos were yesterday waiting for the floods to recede. They were warned to vacate the flood-prone area because of the expected intense rains. Many parts of Lagos Island have been thrown into darkness because the floods soaked power facilities. Niger State was worst hit by the floods after five hours of rainfall. Nine people died in Checheniya and one in Kuala, Suleja. Another person died in Ayin-Nassarrawa in Tara Local Government Area of Niger State. Houses were submerged. Nigerians tasked on sectoral challenges in education

A Federal lawmaker, Sen. Ben Bruce, on Tuesday said there was need to address all fundamental challenges facing the nation’s education sector, in order to attain the much-desired development. FG To Start Trial Of Boko Haram Suspects Next Month

The Federal Government will begin the trial of Boko Haram suspects detained in military camps from next month and the cases will be speedily handled, the Federal Ministry of Justice said on Sunday. “All is now set to begin the arraignment of suspected Boko Haram suspects in various detention facilities in the country,” a statement said, adding that this would start on October 9. Justice Minister Abubakar Malami has assigned government prosecutors while defence counsels would be provided by the Legal Aid Council, it said. The ministry said 1,600 detainees will be tried early next month, adding that judges who would “expeditiously” handle the cases had been chosen. Despite claims by the Nigerian security forces that thousands of Boko Haram suspects have been arrested and were in custody, diligent prosecutions and convictions have been rare. Adamawa Assembly removes Deputy Speaker, three others

The Adamawa House of Assembly on Monday impeached four of the principal officers, including the Deputy Speaker, Mr Sunday Peter, and the Majority Leader, Alhaji Musa Mahmud. Others removed were the Deputy Majority Leader, Mutawali Mohammed and the Minority Leader, Mrs Justina Nkom (SDP-Lamurde) State Constituency. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Speaker, Alhaji Kabiru Mijinyawa, presided over the first plenary after the house resumed from a six-week recess. The deputy speaker was immediately replaced by Mr Emmanuel Tsamdu (APC-Madagali) while Mr Hassan Burguma (APC-Hong) was also elected new majority leader. Mr Abubakar Hayatu (APC-Uba/Gaya) moved the motion for the impeachment of the deputy speaker and was seconded by Abubakar Abdurrahman (APC-Mubi South). The house elected Abubakar Isa (APC-Shelleng) new deputy majority leader while Mr Lamsumbani Dili (PDP-Demsa) took over as the minority leader.

Minister: skilled ICT manpower gap widening

The Minister of Communications, Mr Adebayo Shittu, has lamented the widening gap in skilled manpower in the information communication technology (ICT) sector in the country. He said expatriates have virtually taken over the tech space in the country. Shittu, who spoke at the inauguration of an Implementation Committee on the proposed ICT University of Nigeria, in Abuja,  said it has become imperative to have the university to leapfrog the country into a digital economy. The Committee has six weeks to submit its report so that the university can begin academic activities in the next session. Headed by the former Executive Secretary of the National University Commission (NUC), Prof Julius Okojie, the minister said the six campuses of the Digital Bridge Institute (DBI) located in the six geo-political zones of the country would serve as the university campuses. Three students arrested for faking kidnap in Enugu

The Enugu State Police Command said on Friday that three secondary school students have been arrested for allegedly faking kidnapping within the Enugu metropolis. The state’s Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Ebere Amaraizu, disclosed this in a statement in Enugu. Amaraizu said the students of the Enugu-based secondary school had demanded a ransom of N500, 000 from the alleged victim’s father. He said the police through its Anti-Kidnapping Unit had begun investigation to unravel the circumstances behind the alleged faking of kidnap. Dokpesi, Iwuanyanwu , others form party

A new political party, Advanced Peoples Democratic Alliance (APDA), was unveiled yesterday, ahead of the pending Supreme Court’s judgment on the leadership tussle in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The party was linked to the Ahmed Makarfi faction of the PDP. Apparently unsure of the direction of the judgment in the struggle between him and the court-backed PDP National Chairman, Ali Modu Sheriff, the new party is seen as a preemptive move by the Makarfi camp. The two warring factions are awaiting a date from the Supreme Court for a final judgment on a cross appeal filed by the Makarfi camp seeking to remove Sheriff as national chairman. The APDA, which said its national convention would hold in November, was unveiled at the Reiz Continental Hotel, Abuja with proxies as its interim national officers.
