How to reduce sickle cell patients, by hospital

The Federal Medical Centre in Ebute-Meta, Lagos, has called on those yet to know their genotype to avail themselves of the hospital’s services. By doing so, the hospital said a significant reduction in people living with the Sickle Cell Disorder (SCD) will be recorded. According to the centre, one out of every four Nigerians has sickle cell trait. According to the Acting Medical Director, Dr Olubukola Aseru, over 300, 000 children are born annually with SCD, and 70 per cent of these births happen in Sub-Sahara Africa. He said: “Nigeria by virtue of its population stands out as the most affected country in Africa with annual infant deaths of 100, 000, representing eight per cent of infant mortality. One out of four Nigerians has sickle cell trait; therefore, people need to be sensitised about the existence, consequences, prevention and care of SCD. Nigeria must not back Morocco’s admittance into ECOWAS

The Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) has opposed moves by Morocco to be admitted into the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). MAN, at its 45th annual general meeting (AGM) in Lagos yesterday, warned the Federal Government against supporting Morocco. It noted that the admission of the North African country will be disastrous for Nigeria. Speaking through its President, Frank Udemba Jacobs, MAN noted that admitting Morocco into ECOWAS would be equivalent to signing the Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA). Jacobs said: “We urge the Federal Government to oppose the move as it would spell doom for the productive sector of the economy. “We are aware Morocco and the European Union (EU) have a trade agreement, which means if it becomes part of ECOWAS, products that come into Morocco from EU will end up in Nigeria. Lagos screens 36,000 for HIV

To achieve Lagos State’s plan to eliminate the Human  Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV/AIDS)  by 2030, the state aids control agency (LSACA)  is screening of over 36,000 residents of Ikorodu. According to LSACA Director- General/CEO Dr. Oluseyi Temowo, who spoke at Ijede in Ikorodu, the story of HIV/AIDS has changed because 30 years ago, HIV was unknown and it killed a lot of people. “But today, HIV is no longer a death sentence; rather it is a life sentence. People can live their normal life because there are drugs, prevention and control measures put in place. So, if anybody dies of HIV/AIDS, it is because he or she did not take care of himself or herself or did not avail himself or herself of drugs and proper treatment,”Temowo said. AIB boss charges NAAPE on professionalism

Accident, Investigation Bureau (AIB) Commissioner Akin Olateru  has urged members of the National Association of Aircraft Pilots and Engineers (NAAPE) to be more professional in the discharge of their duties. According to Olateru, if NAAPE members, aircraft engineers and pilots in various organisations display professionalism in the discharge of their duties, the aviation industry would experience more growth and continue to remain safe for flight operations. Doctors’ strike: CMDs to keep hospitals alive

The Federal Government moved fast on Wednesday to mitigate the resident doctors’ strike by ordering medical directors to ensure interrupted services. A meeting will hold today between the leadership of the National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) and government representatives to resolve the industrial action declared on Monday. Minister of Health Prof. Isaac Adewole also directed  heads of government hospitals to ensure that other medical doctors in the other strata, including those on  National Youth Service, fill the vacuum. Adewole  assured that government-owned hospitals would accept patients. Arrangements were also being made to use the Armed forces, the Police and Federal Road Safety Corps health facilities.
