•It’s time for the Federal Government to take another look at the confab report Three years after the report of the National Conference convoked by the former President Goodluck Jonathan was submitted to the presidency, the resolutions have continued to generate interest across the country.  Prominent members of the conference have insisted that the resolutions hold the key to peace, progress and unity in the land. However, the executive branch of government, following the change of baton in 2015, has vowed to have nothing to do with the conference report, dismissing it as worthless. No sooner did President Muhammadu Buhari replace Dr. Jonathan than he declared that he had not as much as taken a look at the report. Now that both houses of the National Assembly have decided to re-examine and debate the report, the presidency should reconsider its stance on the matter. It is obvious that we have come to a point in our national history when we ought to consider all suggestions ...

French president, African leaders meet on al-Qaida, Boko Haram

President  Emmanuel Macron of France is meeting West African leaders today in Mali to discuss support for a new 5,000-strong multinational force meant to counter a growing threat from terror groups including Boko Haram and al-Qaida. Heads of state from five nations across Africa’s vast Sahel region have called for a new regional force after terrorists targeted tourist resorts and other high-profile areas in the region especially in Mali. The visit is Macron’s second to Mali in a month and a half which defines his hard-stand against terrorism especially those linked to al-Qaida in the region. The U.N. Security Council last month approved the deployment of the new force with troops from Mali, Burkina Faso, Mauritania, Niger and Chad after at least five people were killed in an attack on a Mali resort popular with foreigners. Reports suggest that funding of the new force meant to be operational in the next few months will be the major focus of the meeting. On inauguration...

CBN lifts forex market with $195m

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) yesterday intervened in the foreign exchange (forex) market with a  $195 injection into key segments of the economy. The forex inflow, which came on the first day of business after the  Eid-el-Fitr  celebration, went to various segments of the inter-bank market. The intervention was part of CBN’s plans to shore up the value of the naira against the dollar and achieve its exchange rate stability goal. The naira continued its stability in the forex market, closing at N370/$1 in the parallel market, from N520/$1 in February. The narrowing of rate gap was achieved after the CBN in the last four months pumped over $5 billion into the interbank, bureau de change, wholesale spot and forwards auction segments of the market. Also, supporting the naira is the newly introduced Investor/Exporter Forex window which has attracted $2.5 billion from foreign investors since April 24, when it was introduced. Analysts said the introduction of a...

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) on Monday said no corps member was killed in Bayelsa State. NYSC made the clarification following the reported killing of one Samuel Collins by suspected cultists in Bayelsa. It said the deceased was not a corps member. The statement said: “A search through our records in Bayelsa State showed that no such name as Samuel Collins appeared on the list of serving corps members. “For the avoidance of doubt, police officers in the state have identified the deceased as staff of a Yenagoa-based agency. “While sympathizing with the bereaved family, we take exception to the misrepresentation of facts in that report, which is capable of sensationalizing the issue of safety and general welfare of our corps members. “Management urges corps members serving in Bayelsa State as well as their parents and guardians to remain calm as we remain committed to working with relevant stakeholders to ensure their continued safety.”

Rivers East district has no senator, says Wike

Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike has said Rivers East has no senator. He spoke yesterday at  a Thanksgiving Service for Senator George Thompson Sekibo, at the St Thomas Anglican Church in Diobu. Sekibo was sacked from the National Assembly by the Court of Appeal last week. He accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) of destroying key national institutions. Wike said following APC’s negative governance style, the police and Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) have metamorphosed into rigging machines threatening the peace of the country. According to him, the Appeal Court judgment, which led to the loss of Rivers East mandate is a fallout of the “unfortunate illegal alliance  between the police and INEC”. He explained the APC tendered results certified by the Police to the tribunal, which the tribunal relied on, rather than results declared by INEC on election day. He said incidentally, both results had the same serial numbers, which showed the f...

New ransomware attack spreads across the world

Hackers demand $300 in Bitcoin for code to unlock computers around the world A  major ransomware cyber attack has struck computers around the world, with hackers demanding $300 (£234) be paid to an anonymous Bitcoin account  to decrypt users' data . Computers in Ukraine and Russia, including the country's biggest oil company, were hit first, before the attack spread to the UK, Netherlands, France, Norway, Spain and Romania. Chernobyl's nuclear power plant "also had to monitor radiation levels manually after its Windows-based sensors were shut down", the BBC reports. "Online records showed that 30 victims had paid the ransom," says the New York Times. However, "other victims may be out of luck, after Posteo, the German email service provider, shut down the hackers' email account". Cyber security experts say the ransomware appears to exploit the same vulnerability in Microsoft Windows as a previous attack which crippled the NHS in...

Photo: AP Washington:  President Donald Trump said on Friday that Mexico should “absolutely” pay for his proposed border wall as he sat down with Mexico’s President Enrique Pena Nieto at the Group of 20 (G20) summit in Hamburg, their first meeting as leaders after Pena Nieto scrapped a sit-down in January over the issue. As the two leaders began their meeting, a reporter asked Trump if he still wanted Mexico to pay for a wall stretching along the Mexican border to control the flow of illegal immigrants, a proposal that was one of Trump’s biggest applause lines during the presidential campaign. “Absolutely,” Trump said. Mexico has said it has no intention of paying for the wall, and even Trump ...

Businessman urges court to reverse ruling on EFCC seizure

United Arab Emirates-based Nigerian businessman, Mr.  Olalekan Olakehinde, has urged the Court of Appeal, Abuja Division, to reverse a decision by the FCT High Court. Sitting as a vacation judge, Justice Yusuf Halilu dismissed Olakehinde’s rights’ violation suit instituted against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for illegaly seizing 18 cars, on display for sale, in Abuja. The anti-graft commission alleged that the cars were suspected to have been bought with proceeds of crime. But the car dealer claimed the seizure was carried out without lawful authorisation. In his six-ground notice of appeal filed on September 12 by his counsel, Aliyu Umar (SAN), the businessman is seeking a reversal of the ruling. The  dealer contended that the trial erroneously substituted his complaint of rights’ violation to own property to that of rights’ violation to dignity of person. “The learned judge erred in law when he substituted the appellant’s cau...

6 RED FLAGS YOU SHOULD LOOK OUT FOR IN A RELATIONSHIP

Nobody said everything should always go smooth and dandy in relationships but when some things happen one should not just sweep it under the rug because eventually it would all come back to bite you on the butt. However hard we fall for someone, we should still look out for ourselves. Here are some alarm bells to watch out for: 1. PLAYING THE BLAME GAME:  Ever known someone who blamed their parents or spouse for everything that’s gone wrong? We’re all adults, and have to take responsibility for our own lives and our choices. There’s nothing attractive about a man who spends dates moaning about his exes and how it was all their fault. If that happens, exit via the bathroom window. 2. BEING UNSUPPORTIVE:  We all go through bad times, and someone who loves you will be there for you when you suffer bereavement, ill health or job loss. If they are unsympathetic, tell you it’s your fault or just don’t seem to care, then why are you with this person? Partners support each o...
