Ojukwu, Zik varsities join NASU, SSANU strike

The Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) and the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU), both in Anambra State, have joined the nationwide strike of some academic unions. The institutions joined under the aegis of Joint Action Committee of Trade Unions comprising Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU), the Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Universities (SSANU) and the National Association of Academic technical (NAAS). Members of the unions held separate meetings in their institutions where the decision to join the national body was taken. At the end of the meeting at Ojukwu Varsity at Igbariam, the chairman of Joint Action Committee of Trade Unions at the school, Andrew Okeke, said the unions had joined the strike. Rodriguez joins Bayern Munich on £40m loan deal

Real Madrid playmaker James Rodriguez has signed for Bayern Munich on a two-year loan deal – in a move that reunites him with Italian manager Carlo Ancelotti. Rodriguez will have a medical with the German giants before completing his move to the Allianz Arena – in a deal which could cost up to £40million. Bayern will also have an option to buy the Colombia international permanently at the end of the loan deal on June 30, 2019. Security man jailed 10 years for manslaughter

A Lagos High Court on Thursday sentenced a 33-year-old security guard, Emmanuel Ajeoge, to 10 years imprisonment for manslaughter. Justice Raliat Adebiyi handed down the sentence after convicting Ajeoge for the death of a young lady, Gloria Okhiran, through accidental discharge of a local gun. Ajeoge was initially arraigned on a one count charge of murder contrary to Sections 319(1) of the Criminal Code laws of Lagos state 2011 but was convicted for manslaughter. Justice Adebiyi said, “The court finds the defendant not guilty of murder charge on the grounds that the evidence before it does not prove beyond reasonable doubt that there was an intention to commit murder. “The defendant is hereby found guilty of manslaughter contrary to Sections 317 of the Criminal laws of Lagos State, 2003.” The judge said the defendant, who knew he had an unlicensed gun, ought to have handled it cautiously in order to avert such dangers. The  Oodua People’s Congress (OPC) has urged Arewa and Igbo youths to embrace peace in the national interest. FG tasks CSOs, others on nutrition budget tracking

The Federal Government has urged civil society groups and other nutrition stakeholders to prioritize tracking of resources allocated to nutrition in various tiers of government to ensure appropriate implementation. Dr. Chris Isokpunwu, Head of Nutrition Federal Ministry of Health, made the call at a dissemination meeting for budget analysis for health and nutrition on Saturday in Abuja. The meeting was organized by the Civil Society Scaling-Up Nutrition in Nigeria a coalition under the Partnership for Advocacy in Child and Family Health. Isokpunwu, who identified malnutrition as a public health issue, emphasized the existence of a strategic plan of action on nutrition that demanded adequate budgetary allocation by all tiers of government. NASS failed to address key issues on budget – Fashola

The Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Mr. Babatunde Fashola, on Monday said the National Assembly’s response to his observation on the 2017 Budget did not address fundamental issues raised on funds allocated to  key ministries. Fashola, in a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media, Hakeem Bello, expressed concern over the recourse to name-calling and personal attack by the federal lawmakers, insisting the legislators lack power to insert items in budget prepared by the executive. The minister said he was worried that spokespersons of the Senate and House of Representatives failed to state the reason the National Assembly cut allocations to key infrastructure projects of the ministry.
