38 Nigerian universities increased tuition fees – ASUU

At least 38 universities across the country have increased their tuition fees due to poor funding by federal and state governments.
The Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Ibadan Chapter, Dr. Deji Omole, stated this in a statement in Abuja on Monday.
The statement which assessed the two years of President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration, lamented that the government had made Nigerians poorer.
Omole said the public education was not taken seriously because “children of the rich and those in high offices” do not attend school in Nigeria.
“The latest increment might be attributed to poor funding by the federal and state governments as ASUU poorly rated the President Muhammadu Buhari in the area of funding of university education,” the statement said.
ASUU also noted that it would be difficult for any Nigeria university to compete globally due to inadequate budgetary allocation to the educational sector.
Findings revealed that students of University of Lagos (UNILAG) who were paying N14, 500 would now pay N63, 500 as tuition fees.
Other institutions that increased their fees included the Ahmadu Bello University ( N27, 000 to N41, 00), University of Nigeria (N60, 450 to N66, 950) and Obafemi Awolowo University ( N19, 700 to N55,700).
Others are – Nnamdi Azikiwe University ( N20, 100 to N65,920), Bayero University, Kano, (N26,000 to N40,000), University of Abuja (N39,300 to N42,300) and Usman Danfodiyo University ( N32,000 to N41,000).

Man killed by gunmen in Yenagoa not NYSC member – Spokesman

Samuel Collins, the 31-year-old man shot dead by unknown gunmen on Saturday in Yenagoa, is not a corps member, an official of the National Youths Service Corps (NYSC) in Bayelsa, has said. Mr Mathew Ngobua, Head, Public Relations Unit, NYSC office Yenagoa, made the clarification on Monday in Yenagoa in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN). He said that checks conducted at NYSC database revealed that the name of the victim was not in the record. He described reports that the victim was a corps member as “misleading,’’ adding that the security of corps members was top priority of the management of the NYSC in Bayelsa. Ekiti State All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship aspirant Hon. Bimbo Daramola has urged the party leadership to conduct a credible primary to avert post-primary crisis. Senate gives NPA four days for information on 282 missing vessels

The Senate on Thursday, gave the Managing Director, Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Hadiza Usman, four days to explain the whereabouts of over 282 vessels allegedly missing from the sea ports. Sen. Hope Uzodinma, Chairman, Senate’s Joint Committee on Customs, Excise and Tariff and Marine Transport, gave the ultimatum in Abuja, at an investigative hearing on N30 trillion lost through leakages in Customs and other agencies. Wike raising false alarm against security agencies, says APC

The Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has accused Governor Nyesom Wike of raising false alarm against security agencies. Homes submerged in Lagos, Suleja, Ibadan Ikoyi, Lekki, others thrown into darkness Floods hit many Nigerian cities after long hours of rainfall at the weekend. There were deaths. Homes were  flooded. Eleven people died in Suleja and other towns in Niger State. Many parts of Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, were flooded. MOHBAD: FRESH-FM BANS NAIRA MARLEY SONGS

  A privately owned radio broadcast station, Fresh FM 106.9 FM, Ado in Ekiti State, on Tuesday morning, banned the playing of songs by Nigerian singer, Azeez Fashola, popularly known as Naira Marley, from airing on the station till further notice. The radio station disclosed this in a post shared on its Instagram handle (@freshfm1069adoekiti) and signed by its Head of production and Music Content, Oluwaseunfunmi Williams. The ban follows the death of Nigerian singer Ilerioluwa Oladimeji, popularly known as MohBad, and criticism surrounding Naira Marley.
