Nigeria, Mexico trade volume hits $600m

The trade volume between Nigeria and Mexico has grown by 360 per cent from $166.5 million in 2012 to $600 million in 2016.
The Mexican Embassy, Deputy Head of Mission, Rodrigo Tenorio, stated this in Abuja on Monday.
He spoke on the sideline of a workshop for working business group on trade mission to Mexico organised by the Nigerian-Mexican Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NMCCI) and Mexican Embassy.
He said, “Though the figure may be small but in reality it is a huge transaction that we have in the last 15 years, which was then $45 million.
“What that means is that it has grown more than 500 times in 15 years and our aim and goal is to ensure it grows more.
“There are some similarity between Nigeria and Mexico, we are predominantly largest and young population and we are about power house of our region just as Nigeria in Africa.”
He said the major challenge in the relationship between the two countries was that they did not know each other well.
“We do not know each other, Mexico is known for drugs while Nigeria is known for Boko Haram and other social vices.
“But there is much more than that, what is most important in building the relationship is to know each other better.
“Once we know that Mexico is more than drug cartel and baron, Nigeria is much more than a small group in the north causing trouble,” Tenorio added.

$14.1b forex deals attract investors

Foreign investors’ confidence in the economy is rising. The feat is attributed to the $14.1 billion combined foreign exchange (forex) deals from the Investors’ & Exporters’ FX Window – I&E FX Window- and the Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CBN’s) weekly dollar interventions,  The Nation  has learnt. The I&E FX Window has since April attracted $7.6 billion foreign investors’ cash into the economy. The CBN has injected nearly $6.5 billion into the economy within the period to settle forex obligations mainly at the retail end of the market. Senate gives NPA four days for information on 282 missing vessels

The Senate on Thursday, gave the Managing Director, Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Hadiza Usman, four days to explain the whereabouts of over 282 vessels allegedly missing from the sea ports. Sen. Hope Uzodinma, Chairman, Senate’s Joint Committee on Customs, Excise and Tariff and Marine Transport, gave the ultimatum in Abuja, at an investigative hearing on N30 trillion lost through leakages in Customs and other agencies. Uzodinma, who expressed displeasure with the managing director for not honouring the committee’s two previous invitations, said the information on the vessels was imperative and must be available within four days. SAN disagrees with Falana, insists Chief Judges can’t grant pardon

The debate over whether or not Chief Judges possess the power to grant pardon to awaiting trial detainees continued yesterday with a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Sebastine Hon insisting the Chief Judges cannot legally grant pardon. Hon spoke in reaction to argument credited to human rights lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN) to the effect that Chief Judges can grant pardon under the Prisons Act and the Criminal Justice (Release from Custody) (Special Provisions) Act.
