Benue flooding: NIMASA boss laud VP over visit

The Chairman, Governing Board of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Maj.-Gen Jonathan India Garba (retd.) has commended the Federal Government for its commitment to the dredging of the River Benue.
He applauded the president’s directive to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to provide emergency aid to the victims, saying it brought succour and prevented the situation from deteriorating even further.
The NIMASA boss in a release signed by an aide, Adakole Ejegbudu, and made available to reporters yesterday said that “the gratitude of the entire people of Benue and other locations across the country affected by this years’s floods is eternal”.
He lauded the Vice President Yemi Osinbajo (SAN) for his prompt visit to devasted areas of Benue State, in the aftermath of the recent flooding.
“The visit of the Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo to Makurdi at the behest of the President showed the Presidency’s commitment to the well being of ordinary Nigerians and is in keeping with his loyalty and exemplary leadership demonstrated in the President’s absence.

Senate gives NPA four days for information on 282 missing vessels

The Senate on Thursday, gave the Managing Director, Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Hadiza Usman, four days to explain the whereabouts of over 282 vessels allegedly missing from the sea ports. Sen. Hope Uzodinma, Chairman, Senate’s Joint Committee on Customs, Excise and Tariff and Marine Transport, gave the ultimatum in Abuja, at an investigative hearing on N30 trillion lost through leakages in Customs and other agencies. Uzodinma, who expressed displeasure with the managing director for not honouring the committee’s two previous invitations, said the information on the vessels was imperative and must be available within four days. NIMC chief faults identification system

NATIONAL Identity Management Commission (NIMC)  Director-General, Aliyu Aziz, has faulted the identification system, arguing that it cannot foster economic growth. Impact of $3b bond on debt ’ll be modest

T he Federal Government’s plan to issue USD3 billion worth of foreign bonds of up to three years maturity to refinance maturing naira-denominated treasury bills, if approved, will have a modest impact on broad debt sustainability indicators, experts at PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC Nigeria) have said. In line with Federal Government’s debt management strategy to rebalance its debt portfolio for domestic and foreign debt, from the current 69 per cent: 3 1 per cent to a targeted 60per cent: 40 per cent, the Federal Executive Council (FEC) recently approved a plan to issue USD3 billion worth of foreign bonds of up to three years maturity to refinance maturing naira-denominated treasury bills. Homes submerged in Lagos, Suleja, Ibadan Ikoyi, Lekki, others thrown into darkness Floods hit many Nigerian cities after long hours of rainfall at the weekend. There were deaths. Homes were  flooded. Eleven people died in Suleja and other towns in Niger State. Many parts of Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, were flooded. Residents of highbrow Victoria Island, Lekki and Ajah in Lagos were yesterday waiting for the floods to recede. They were warned to vacate the flood-prone area because of the expected intense rains. Many parts of Lagos Island have been thrown into darkness because the floods soaked power facilities. Niger State was worst hit by the floods after five hours of rainfall. Nine people died in Checheniya and one in Kuala, Suleja. Another person died in Ayin-Nassarrawa in Tara Local Government Area of Niger State. Houses were submerged.
