Gunmen ‘kill’ Tiv monarch


The kindred head of Ushir, in Shitile clan, Katsina Ala Local Government of Benue State, Chief Yimaorga Asogo, has been allegedly killed by gunmen.
A source said: “Chief Asogo was abducted from his home last night by gunmen after they overpowered his family.
“He was taken away, strangled and his body was abandoned in a bush before it was later found by a search party.”
Killings have been on the rise since the state government declared criminal gang leader, Terwase Akwaza, wanted.
Those murdered are mostly from Yooyo ward, Kpav Shitile in Katsina Ala Local Government, the country home of the wanted gang leader.
The President of Sankera Development Association (SADA), Gboko branch, Teryila Asom, who confirmed the killing of the monarch, urged security agencies to live up to their responsibility.
He lamented that Sankera, known for yam production, was gradually being turned into a war zone.

Ekiti APC elders endorse zoning

Minister: skilled ICT manpower gap widening

The Minister of Communications, Mr Adebayo Shittu, has lamented the widening gap in skilled manpower in the information communication technology (ICT) sector in the country. He said expatriates have virtually taken over the tech space in the country. Shittu, who spoke at the inauguration of an Implementation Committee on the proposed ICT University of Nigeria, in Abuja,  said it has become imperative to have the university to leapfrog the country into a digital economy. The Committee has six weeks to submit its report so that the university can begin academic activities in the next session. Lawyers: IPOB’s funding can be blocked diplomatically

Lawyers yesterday said the federal government can block the funding of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) through diplomatic means. The government had said IPOB gets its funding from France, which it described as the group’s international headquarters. But France denied having anything to do with the secessionist group. Director-General of West African Institute for Financial and Economic Management (WAIFEM), Prof. Akpan Ekpo, urged the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU) to track financial flows to IPOB. He said the agency should work closely with all core regulators of financial, other-financial institutions, designated non- financial businesses and professions to ensure that funding for IPOB is blocked. FG spends N3.7bn to feed 1.2 million pupils – Akande

The Federal Government (FG) has released N3.77 billion for the feeding of 1,287,270 school children in nine states under the Home Grown School Feeding Programme. This is was announced on Sunday by the Senior Special Assistant to the Acting President, Mr Laolu Akande. He said the benefiting states, comprising Anambra, Enugu, Oyo, Osun, Ogun, Ebonyi, Zamfara, Delta and Abia,  received various sums in tranches. He also said that 14,574 cooks were engaged in the communities where the schools were located. According to Akande, the money is paid directly from the FG’s coffers to the cooks, with a slight variation in Osun State where some of the food items, such as eggs, were bought centrally by an aggregator. He added that the federal government intended to feed no fewer than three million pupils in 2017 under the feeding Programme, an aspect of the Social Investment Programme (SIP) of the Buhari presidency.

Senate to Buhari: Call Sagay to order

Says “He’s a loose cannon” The Senate yesterday asked President Muhammadu Buhari to rein in the chairman of the Presidential Action Committee on Anti-Corruption (PACAC),  Professor Itse  Sagay. The upper chamber accused the PACAC boss of spreading falsehood and making hate speeches against the National Assembly. Kidnap suspects arrested in Kogi

Two suspected members of a kidnap gang in Kogi State have been arrested by operatives of the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Intelligence Response Team (IRT). Suleiman Isah (24) and Musa Mohammed (31), both natives of Ankpa, were arrested on May 29 at Ninth Mile, Enugu State, and Ayinba in Kogi. They were said to be among the criminals who kidnapped an Islamic Scholar, Alhaji Jibrin Idris, on February 21. The suspects allegedly confessed to be four in the gang, giving the names of others as Bashir and Mangal. The police said efforts are on to arrest the two members at large.

Varsity sacks lecturer for sexual harassment

A lecturer in the Faculty of Education, Ebonyi State University (EBSU), has been sacked by the management. The management also suspended Onwe Chinedu Ogah, of the Department of History and International Relations,  for alleged sexual harassment and extortion. The students yesterday decried the alleged high rate of sexual harassment and extortion by lecturers. Ogah is facing a disciplinary committee for alleged sexual harassment and extortion. The Nation  investigation showed that students allegedly paid between N10,000 and N30,000 to pass a particular course, or had sex with lecturers if they could not pay. A victim, Chinenye Chike, alleged that she had carry-over because she failed to pay the N10,000 demanded by the lecturer or sleep with him.
