HMO urges best professional practices


The Managing Director of Clearline Health Maintenance Organisation (HMO), Dr. Isaac Akintunji, has reiterated the need for best practices in corporate governance in the health sector, particularly among the Health Maintenance Organisations (HMOs).
This, according to him, will instill public confidence in the health insurance scheme and engender growth in the industry.
Akintunji, who disclosed this to The Nation, said it was imperative for corporate organisations to ensure strict adherence to best practices and ethical standards, adding that  organisations needed to put sound management structures in place and promote business integrity.
Akintunji, a life member of the Institute of Directors, together with two Executive Directors of Clearline HMO, Dr Babatunde Ladele and Mr Oladapo Kolawole,  urged emphasis on business integrity and enduring values. Dr. Akintunji and Dr. Ladele are medical professionals, while Rev. Kolawole is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN).
Noting HMOs strategic importance to the well-being of human capital that would steer any nation out of economic challenge, Dr. Akintunji pointed out that HMOs  must operate with utmost integrity, professionalism and strong ethical value system, arguing that organisations that would take care of human capital’s health must first be healthy in its operating system and structures.
He challenged HMOs to ensure prompt payment of capitation and payment of claims as at when due, stressing that such would deepen the penetration of the health insurance scheme in Nigeria, and ultimately help in nurturing a virile economy since the human capital would be at the optimal performance level.
He called on operators to enthrone sincerity of purpose in the discharge of their duties, adding that care providers should adhere strictly to professional standards. Dr. Akintunji also called on regulators in the health sector to perform their oversight functions effectively.
This, according to him, will eradicate unprofessional conducts that may hamper the growth of the insurance scheme in Nigeria.

Man killed by gunmen in Yenagoa not NYSC member – Spokesman

Samuel Collins, the 31-year-old man shot dead by unknown gunmen on Saturday in Yenagoa, is not a corps member, an official of the National Youths Service Corps (NYSC) in Bayelsa, has said. Mr Mathew Ngobua, Head, Public Relations Unit, NYSC office Yenagoa, made the clarification on Monday in Yenagoa in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN). He said that checks conducted at NYSC database revealed that the name of the victim was not in the record. He described reports that the victim was a corps member as “misleading,’’ adding that the security of corps members was top priority of the management of the NYSC in Bayelsa. Ekiti State All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship aspirant Hon. Bimbo Daramola has urged the party leadership to conduct a credible primary to avert post-primary crisis. Senate gives NPA four days for information on 282 missing vessels

The Senate on Thursday, gave the Managing Director, Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Hadiza Usman, four days to explain the whereabouts of over 282 vessels allegedly missing from the sea ports. Sen. Hope Uzodinma, Chairman, Senate’s Joint Committee on Customs, Excise and Tariff and Marine Transport, gave the ultimatum in Abuja, at an investigative hearing on N30 trillion lost through leakages in Customs and other agencies. Uzodinma, who expressed displeasure with the managing director for not honouring the committee’s two previous invitations, said the information on the vessels was imperative and must be available within four days. Wike raising false alarm against security agencies, says APC

The Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has accused Governor Nyesom Wike of raising false alarm against security agencies. The governor, on Wednesday, claimed the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) operatives were behind kidnapping and robbery in the state. NATIONAL Identity Management Commission (NIMC)  Director-General, Aliyu Aziz, has faulted the identification system, arguing that it cannot foster economic growth. Homes submerged in Lagos, Suleja, Ibadan Ikoyi, Lekki, others thrown into darkness Floods hit many Nigerian cities after long hours of rainfall at the weekend. There were deaths. Homes were  flooded. Eleven people died in Suleja and other towns in Niger State. Many parts of Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, were flooded. MOHBAD: FRESH-FM BANS NAIRA MARLEY SONGS

  A privately owned radio broadcast station, Fresh FM 106.9 FM, Ado in Ekiti State, on Tuesday morning, banned the playing of songs by Nigerian singer, Azeez Fashola, popularly known as Naira Marley, from airing on the station till further notice. The radio station disclosed this in a post shared on its Instagram handle (@freshfm1069adoekiti) and signed by its Head of production and Music Content, Oluwaseunfunmi Williams. The ban follows the death of Nigerian singer Ilerioluwa Oladimeji, popularly known as MohBad, and criticism surrounding Naira Marley.
