FIBA was good exposure for Nigerian players – NBBF


A member of the Nigeria Basketball Federation ( NBBF ), Retd. Col. Sam Ahmedu, on Monday said Nigeria’s participation in the FIBA Africa 3×3 Championship was a good exposure for the players.
Ahmedu told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja that in spite of losing in the final matches to Mali, Nigeria still had a good outing.
NAN reports that Mali defeated Nigeria’s Junior D’Tigers and Junior D’Tigress 22-17 points and 9-7 points respectively in the final matches of the competition on Sunday.
“Even with the losses in the final matches, it was not a bad outing for Nigeria”.
“We knew it would be tough and that the hosts would leave no stone unturned to win the competition, which was being organised in honour of one of their people there”.
“We should also not forget that Nigeria’s under-18 boys beat them in the Preliminary Round. Overall, it was a good exposure for our young boys and girls, and this portends a good future for their development,” he said.
According to the NBBF official website, both teams did the country proud during the competition.
During the tournament, the male team remained unbeaten in their opening round matches, even when they met Mali in the preliminary encounter.
Nigeria’s under-18 boys defeated Togo 21-8 in their first game, while Republic of Benin suffered a 13-20 loss to Nigeria in their second Group A match.
Junior D’Tigers defeated Mali 18-13 in their final group game, and went on to beat Benin 21-11 points in the semi-finals.
Similarly, the Junior D’Tigress defeated Togo 12-8 in their first match, and lost 14-16 against Mali.
NAN recalls that the competition, named “Tournoi International Salamatou Maiga U-18 Championship’’, was held in Mali from Saturday to Sunday.
Seven teams, made up of four male and three female teams, participated and they were from Nigeria, Togo, Mali and Republic of Benin.

Senate gives NPA four days for information on 282 missing vessels

The Senate on Thursday, gave the Managing Director, Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Hadiza Usman, four days to explain the whereabouts of over 282 vessels allegedly missing from the sea ports. Sen. Hope Uzodinma, Chairman, Senate’s Joint Committee on Customs, Excise and Tariff and Marine Transport, gave the ultimatum in Abuja, at an investigative hearing on N30 trillion lost through leakages in Customs and other agencies. Uzodinma, who expressed displeasure with the managing director for not honouring the committee’s two previous invitations, said the information on the vessels was imperative and must be available within four days. Pensioners condemn agitations for breakup

THE Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) has asked those agitating for the country’s break up to stop and join hands with the government to promote unity. The union appealed to Acting President Yemi Osinbajo for the payment of the outstanding 18 months of 33  per cent pension arrears following the signing of the budget. Rivers East district has no senator, says Wike

Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike has said Rivers East has no senator. He spoke yesterday at  a Thanksgiving Service for Senator George Thompson Sekibo, at the St Thomas Anglican Church in Diobu. Amnesty trained 14,366 ex-agitators, says Boroh

The Coordinator, Presidential Amnesty Programme (PAP), Brig.-Gen. Paul Boroh has said about 14,366 ex-agitators were trained in the programme. Gen. Boroh spoke at News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) Forum in Abuja, yesterday. He explained their capacities has been developed in agriculture, automobile engineering, and aviation, with a further look at the sports sector. “As we speak, we have trained over 5,000 in education-capacity development, and over 22, 000 in skill acquisition and entrepreneurship development.” He said the programme granted amnesty to 30,000 ex-agitators of Niger Delta. Oral sex producing unstoppable bacteria - WHO

Oral sex is producing dangerous gonorrhoea and a decline in condom use is helping it to spread, the World Health Organization says. It is warning that if you contract gonorrhoea, it is now much harder to treat and in some cases impossible. The sexually transmitted infection is rapidly developing resistance to antibiotics. Experts said the situation was "fairly grim" with few new drugs on the horizon. Around 78 million people pick up the STI each year and it can cause infertility. The World Health Organization (WHO) analysed data from 77 countries and it showed gonorrhoea's resistance to antibiotics was widespread. Dr Teodora Wi said there had even been three cases - in Japan, France and Spain - where the infection was completely untreatable. "Gonorrhoea is a very smart bug, every time you introduce a new class of antibiotics to treat gonorrhoea, the bug becomes resistant," she said. Minister: skilled ICT manpower gap widening

The Minister of Communications, Mr Adebayo Shittu, has lamented the widening gap in skilled manpower in the information communication technology (ICT) sector in the country. He said expatriates have virtually taken over the tech space in the country. Shittu, who spoke at the inauguration of an Implementation Committee on the proposed ICT University of Nigeria, in Abuja,  said it has become imperative to have the university to leapfrog the country into a digital economy.
