Elon Musk has suggested that all users of X, formerly called Twitter, may have to pay for access to the platform. In a conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the billionaire said a payment system was the only way to counter bots. "We're moving to having a small monthly payment for use of the system," the Tesla and SpaceX boss said. The BBC approached X for further details but has not yet received a statement from the company. It is unclear whether this was just an off-the-cuff comment, or a signal of firmer plans that have yet to be announced. Mr Musk has long said that his solution for getting rid of bots and fake accounts on the social media platform is charging for verification. Since taking over Twitter last year he has looked to incentivise users to pay for an enhanced service, which is now called X Premium. This has been done by giving paid subscribers more features, like longer posts and increased visibility on the platform. However, users c...

The debate over whether or not Chief Judges possess the power to grant pardon to awaiting trial detainees continued yesterday with a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Sebastine Hon insisting the Chief Judges cannot legally grant pardon. Hon spoke in reaction to argument credited to human rights lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN) to the effect that Chief Judges can grant pardon under the Prisons Act and the Criminal Justice (Release from Custody) (Special Provisions) Act. Falana had, in a counter-argument, faulted Hon’s position, which was widely reported in the Media on Monday. But, in a detailed analysis Tuesday, Hon insisted on his position, arguing among others, that the laws cited by Falana were unconstitutional. Hon said: “For the avoidance of any doubt, section 35(4) of the 1999 Constitution has covered the field on what should be done to any person accused of an offence; and there is no room for any administrative action by the Judiciary. “Only judicial actions can...

A Lagos High Court on Thursday sentenced a 33-year-old security guard, Emmanuel Ajeoge, to 10 years imprisonment for manslaughter. Justice Raliat Adebiyi handed down the sentence after convicting Ajeoge for the death of a young lady, Gloria Okhiran, through accidental discharge of a local gun. Ajeoge was initially arraigned on a one count charge of murder contrary to Sections 319(1) of the Criminal Code laws of Lagos state 2011 but was convicted for manslaughter.
