‘Ogun cooperative societies own N60b in asset’

The Ogun State government has said the state has about 15,000 cooperative societies, with a cumulative asset of over N60 billion. The government said it would continue to create an enabling environment for cooperative societies to thrive for steady socioe-conomic growth and development. Commissioner, Community Development and Cooperatives Francis Gbenga spoke at a meeting also marking 100 days of Allied Afro-Cooperative Limited of the Old Students’ Association of African Church Grammar School in Abeokuta, the state capital, Governor Ibikunle Amosun’s alma mater. SAN disagrees with Falana, insists Chief Judges can’t grant pardon

The debate over whether or not Chief Judges possess the power to grant pardon to awaiting trial detainees continued yesterday with a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Sebastine Hon insisting the Chief Judges cannot legally grant pardon. Hon spoke in reaction to argument credited to human rights lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN) to the effect that Chief Judges can grant pardon under the Prisons Act and the Criminal Justice (Release from Custody) (Special Provisions) Act. Falana had, in a counter-argument, faulted Hon’s position, which was widely reported in the Media on Monday. But, in a detailed analysis Tuesday, Hon insisted on his position, arguing among others, that the laws cited by Falana were unconstitutional. Governors move to stem spread of IPOB clashes

Governors moved yesterday to stem the tide of violence sparked by the soldiers’ clash with separatists in  Abia State. Plateau State Governor Simon Lalong imposed a dusk-to-dawn curfew in Jos, the state capital, following fears of possible attacks in the city. Abia State Governor Okezie Ikpeazu announced that soldiers would be withdrawn from Aba and Umuahia today – in response to pleas from well-meaning people. Many governors were said to have summoned Security Council meetings to stop the violence from spreading to their states. Southeast governors are meeting today on the Independent People of Biafra (IPOB) challenge. The Sultan of Sokoto issued a statement, calling for peace and unity. Security man jailed 10 years for manslaughter

A Lagos High Court on Thursday sentenced a 33-year-old security guard, Emmanuel Ajeoge, to 10 years imprisonment for manslaughter. Justice Raliat Adebiyi handed down the sentence after convicting Ajeoge for the death of a young lady, Gloria Okhiran, through accidental discharge of a local gun. Ajeoge was initially arraigned on a one count charge of murder contrary to Sections 319(1) of the Criminal Code laws of Lagos state 2011 but was convicted for manslaughter. Justice Adebiyi said, “The court finds the defendant not guilty of murder charge on the grounds that the evidence before it does not prove beyond reasonable doubt that there was an intention to commit murder. “The defendant is hereby found guilty of manslaughter contrary to Sections 317 of the Criminal laws of Lagos State, 2003.” The judge said the defendant, who knew he had an unlicensed gun, ought to have handled it cautiously in order to avert such dangers.
