UK pledges backing for Nigeria, neighbours to defeat Boko Haram


The United Kingdom(UK) has reiterated its support to Nigeria and neighbouring countries to defeat Boko Haram terrorists in the Northeast and the Lake Chad Basin region.
The country’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations (UN), Matthew Rycroft, made the pledge in his statement on Wednesday at the Security Council briefing on the Lake Chad Basin.
Rycroft said it was clear that the Security Council members should redouble their efforts to implement the commitments that they made in resolution 2349 against Boko Haram.
“The UK will play our part. We remain committed to partnering with Nigeria and its neighbours to degrade and defeat Boko Haram.
“We remain committed to helping people in need in the region, having scaled up our humanitarian support to $130 million this year.
“We also announced an additional $260 million over four years, as part of the North East Nigeria Transition to Development programme.
“But we all need to play our part in the Nigeria Humanitarian Fund launched in February with an appeal for one billion dollars this year,” he said.

FRSC deploys 33,000 personnel for Sallah

The Federal Road Safety Corps has approved the deployment of 33,000 regular and special marshals, 859 patrol vehicles, 106 ambulances, 267 motorbikes and 22 tow trucks for the 2017 Eid-el-kabir celebrations. This is to address wrong road usage by motorists which results in a high number of crashes during festivities. The Corps Public Education Officer, Bisi Kazeem, emphasized that the operation will focus on traffic control, speeding, dangerous driving/overtaking, clearance of road obstructions, seatbelt use violation, zero tolerance for use of telephone while driving, lane indiscipline and route violation among others as these have been identified as reoccurring factors of Road Traffic Crashes. NIMC chief faults identification system

Julius Malema, leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters party (EFF) said 60 African National Congress (ANC) members in South Africa’s parliament will back a no-confidence vote against President Jacob Zuma if the ballot is secret. Homes submerged in Lagos, Suleja, Ibadan Ikoyi, Lekki, others thrown into darkness Floods hit many Nigerian cities after long hours of rainfall at the weekend. There were deaths. Homes were  flooded. Eleven people died in Suleja and other towns in Niger State. Many parts of Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, were flooded.
