Construction industry Hall of Fame pushes for local content

Nigeria’s Construction Industry Hall of Fame, an initiative designed for the recognition of outstanding practitioners, organisations and key players in the construction, building, engineering, oil and gas and other related sectors, will host its 4th edition tomorrow.
The event, to be chaired by  Nigerian Society of Engineers President Otis Anyaeji, will feature an interactive forum where professionals will dissect the theme: “Local Content and the Economy, Building Capacity for Growth.”
According to Century 21 Systems Communications Ltd. Chief Executive Officer Mr. Kenneth Odusola- Stevenson, this year’s event is focused on the need for exploring local content to its fullest capacity and for local content to champion the economic revolution necessary for the diversification of the Nigerian economy, considering the current body language of the present administration that tilts towards growing local infrastructure at all sectors of the economy.
Nominees for this year’s edition, he said, has started rolling in and proper scrutiny and selection process is on – going.  He also assured the industry that this year’s edition will surpass the past editions.
Expected dignitaries at the occasion are the Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, Lagos State governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, among others.
Key speakers will include, Group CEO Khariz Group, Samson A Opaluwah; former Executive Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Obong Victor Attah; Founder/CEO Clayfields & Harrow, Mrs. Adama Salihu ; President Waste Management Society of Nigeria (WAMASON) and Chairman/CEO, Jawura Environmental Service Professor Oladele Osibanjo, FNES.

175 Nigerians ‘voluntarily’ return from Libya

Another batch of One Hundred and Seventy-five (175) Nigerians voluntarily returned from Libya on Tuesday aboard a chartered Nouvelair aircraft with registration number TS-INA. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the aircraft landed at 7.50p.m at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos. The returnees were made up of of 34 males, 122 females, 10 children and nine infants. They were brought back by the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) and the Nigerian Embassy in Libya. The returnees were received at the Hajj Camp area of the airport by officers of the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS), the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) and the Police. Killer pastor still in custody – Police

Reacting to speculations that a pastor arrested for the alleged abduction and murder of a baby girl last week in Calabar, Cross River, has been released, the state police command said on Tuesday the suspect is still in custody and would be charged to court. The pastor of God’s Commandments Ministry along Atamunu Street, Calabar, Mr. Tony Obo, was arrested last Thursday for allegedly abducting and killing a one- year- and -seven month old baby, Success, for ritual purposes. The police said items recovered from the pastor included a human heart suspected to be that of the abducted baby, some charms, fetish items and pictures of various persons among others. A branch of the church, along Abua Street in Calabar, was demolished by enraged residents on Friday. FRSC deploys 33,000 personnel for Sallah

The Federal Road Safety Corps has approved the deployment of 33,000 regular and special marshals, 859 patrol vehicles, 106 ambulances, 267 motorbikes and 22 tow trucks for the 2017 Eid-el-kabir celebrations. This is to address wrong road usage by motorists which results in a high number of crashes during festivities. The Corps Public Education Officer, Bisi Kazeem, emphasized that the operation will focus on traffic control, speeding, dangerous driving/overtaking, clearance of road obstructions, seatbelt use violation, zero tolerance for use of telephone while driving, lane indiscipline and route violation among others as these have been identified as reoccurring factors of Road Traffic Crashes. Senate gives NPA four days for information on 282 missing vessels

The Senate on Thursday, gave the Managing Director, Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Hadiza Usman, four days to explain the whereabouts of over 282 vessels allegedly missing from the sea ports. Sen. Hope Uzodinma, Chairman, Senate’s Joint Committee on Customs, Excise and Tariff and Marine Transport, gave the ultimatum in Abuja, at an investigative hearing on N30 trillion lost through leakages in Customs and other agencies. Uzodinma, who expressed displeasure with the managing director for not honouring the committee’s two previous invitations, said the information on the vessels was imperative and must be available within four days. S. Africa’s Malema says no fewer than 60 ANC MPs will turn on Zuma

Julius Malema, leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters party (EFF) said 60 African National Congress (ANC) members in South Africa’s parliament will back a no-confidence vote against President Jacob Zuma if the ballot is secret. Toppling Zuma requires 50 of the 249 ANC Members of Parliament (MPs) to support the no-confidence motion and some have said publicly they want him removed, including former finance minister Pravin Gordhan, whose sacking in March triggered damaging debt ratings downgrades. Amnesty trained 14,366 ex-agitators, says Boroh

The Coordinator, Presidential Amnesty Programme (PAP), Brig.-Gen. Paul Boroh has said about 14,366 ex-agitators were trained in the programme. Gen. Boroh spoke at News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) Forum in Abuja, yesterday. He explained their capacities has been developed in agriculture, automobile engineering, and aviation, with a further look at the sports sector. “As we speak, we have trained over 5,000 in education-capacity development, and over 22, 000 in skill acquisition and entrepreneurship development.” He said the programme granted amnesty to 30,000 ex-agitators of Niger Delta. Oral sex producing unstoppable bacteria - WHO

Oral sex is producing dangerous gonorrhoea and a decline in condom use is helping it to spread, the World Health Organization says. It is warning that if you contract gonorrhoea, it is now much harder to treat and in some cases impossible. The sexually transmitted infection is rapidly developing resistance to antibiotics. Experts said the situation was "fairly grim" with few new drugs on the horizon. Around 78 million people pick up the STI each year and it can cause infertility. The World Health Organization (WHO) analysed data from 77 countries and it showed gonorrhoea's resistance to antibiotics was widespread. Dr Teodora Wi said there had even been three cases - in Japan, France and Spain - where the infection was completely untreatable. "Gonorrhoea is a very smart bug, every time you introduce a new class of antibiotics to treat gonorrhoea, the bug becomes resistant," she said. Minister: skilled ICT manpower gap widening

The Minister of Communications, Mr Adebayo Shittu, has lamented the widening gap in skilled manpower in the information communication technology (ICT) sector in the country. He said expatriates have virtually taken over the tech space in the country. Shittu, who spoke at the inauguration of an Implementation Committee on the proposed ICT University of Nigeria, in Abuja,  said it has become imperative to have the university to leapfrog the country into a digital economy. The Committee has six weeks to submit its report so that the university can begin academic activities in the next session.
