Antarctica’s Larsen C ice shelf is within days of completely cracking

The rift in Antarctica’s Larsen C ice shelf continues to rip. Researchers from Project MIDAS, which tracks the effects of a warming climate on the ice shelf, report that the crack grew 17 kilometers between May 25 and May 31.

The crack has now turned toward the water and is within 13 kilometers of the edge of the shelf. Within days, the crack could reach the edge. When that happens, one of the largest icebergs ever recorded will fall into the ocean.

“There appears to be very little to prevent the iceberg from breaking away completely,” the researchers write.

After calving such a massive section, the shelf won’t be stable. It may experience the same fate as Larsen B, which disintegrated in 2002, after a crack there broke off a huge chunk of ice.

Senate gives NPA four days for information on 282 missing vessels

The Senate on Thursday, gave the Managing Director, Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Hadiza Usman, four days to explain the whereabouts of over 282 vessels allegedly missing from the sea ports. Sen. Hope Uzodinma, Chairman, Senate’s Joint Committee on Customs, Excise and Tariff and Marine Transport, gave the ultimatum in Abuja, at an investigative hearing on N30 trillion lost through leakages in Customs and other agencies. Uzodinma, who expressed displeasure with the managing director for not honouring the committee’s two previous invitations, said the information on the vessels was imperative and must be available within four days. Pensioners condemn agitations for breakup

THE Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) has asked those agitating for the country’s break up to stop and join hands with the government to promote unity. The union appealed to Acting President Yemi Osinbajo for the payment of the outstanding 18 months of 33  per cent pension arrears following the signing of the budget. Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike has said Rivers East has no senator. He spoke yesterday at  a Thanksgiving Service for Senator George Thompson Sekibo, at the St Thomas Anglican Church in Diobu. Amnesty trained 14,366 ex-agitators, says Boroh

The Coordinator, Presidential Amnesty Programme (PAP), Brig.-Gen. Paul Boroh has said about 14,366 ex-agitators were trained in the programme. Gen. Boroh spoke at News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) Forum in Abuja, yesterday. Oral sex is producing dangerous gonorrhoea and a decline in condom use is helping it to spread, the World Health Organization says. It is warning that if you contract gonorrhoea, it is now much harder to treat and in some cases impossible. The sexually transmitted infection is rapidly developing resistance to antibiotics. Experts said the situation was "fairly grim" with few new drugs on the horizon. Around 78 million people pick up the STI each year and it can cause infertility. The World Health Organization (WHO) analysed data from 77 countries and it showed gonorrhoea's resistance to antibiotics was widespread. Dr Teodora Wi said there had even been three cases - in Japan, France and Spain - where the infection was completely untreatable. "Gonorrhoea is a very smart bug, every time you introduce a new class of antibiotics to treat gonorrhoea, the bug becomes resistant," she said.
